I have a SMTA (60177) that was built on the first or second day of production. It has the holes. I have also seen the grill you speak of on a '53 SM. I am guessing that the grill tooling was in place well before the change over on the production line. It would have been an easy alteration to stamp the new holes when the production line needed the SMTA grill. On another matter, I have always wondered if New England received priority on new models. I also have a F400 with serial # 520. I assume that these tractors were shipped by rail and New England got the first train load.
