We always recommend a fluid and filter change to start with, this is the cheapest way to find out if anything more serious is wrong. Does the fluid have a smell to it and darkened colour? Many transmissions are messed when someone gets stuck and shifts back and forth for too long trying to rock the vehicle out. Does the fluid look foamy when it stops moving? There are products that drag racers use to keep trans fluid from foaming(NAPA Carquest PepBoys) getting better drive and shift patterns.
