Clete - Glad you've got it figured out! (I only suggested it because I've done the same thing myself...) Unfortunately here's a good chance you toasted the diode bridge inside the alternator when you got the large spark the first time you made the connection. A good alternator will show no spark when you make the connection - the fact you get a small spark indicates the alternator is drawing current when stopped. If left connected it will drain the battery in a day or two. Suggest taking the alternator in to a NAPA, AutoZone, etc - they will test it for you for free. ...Bob M
