Engine basics #1: To get the most benefit out of the air/fuel mixture the carburetor provides to the cylinders, spark must occur at the correct time. When starting the engine, you do not want the spark to occur before top dead center (BTDC)because the piston could be forced down the cylinder backwards (not good on wrists if hand cranking!!). So, set the spark to happen just at top dead center (TDC) or slightly after top dead center (ATDC). As the engine picks up speed (RPM'S) the magneto or distributor will automatically advance the timing the right amount. The air/fuelmixture burns at about the same speed whether the engine is running fast or slow, so the spark has to happen earlier to fully burn the mixture when operating at higher RPM'S.
