sounds like the ears are worn and someone held the lever in gear and in the process the lever has the little ear worn off that moves the tube back and forth. Better check your tube when it is apart and also the two ears on the shaft that runs the pto when enguaged. People will hold the lever to make the pto run and wear off the little ear on the shifter. Mite have to rebuild the ears on the tube and make sure they are ok on the main shaft. If they are rounded off the pto will not stay in gear.
