I use digital voltmeters at work. Nothing but them. Mine is calibrated to the third decimal place, but I never need that kind of accuracy. Digital or analog, either works well for me. Anyway, do this: remove the field wire from your generator. Put the negative lead of your meter (I am assuming you are using positive ground) on the "ARM" terminal of the generator, and tie the other lead to a solid frame ground. Now, with the engine running, short the "Field" terminal on the generator to ground. The meter reading should go from 6 volts to something greater than 7 volts.. possibly as high as 14 volts. If this part works, your generator is fine. I would suspect the regulator is the culprit. The above assumes you are wired correctly and have no wiring problems. Wire problems at the terminals can be a problem - and hard to find.
