It is my belief, from experience , that torque values should be followed. I never over torque bolts in any application because damage can be done and you stand the chance of bolt stretch and failure by doing so. When I build an engine, I ALWAYS run a tap through the threads and blow the holes out with compressed air. I then LIGHTLY oil the threads on the bolt and follow the torque sequence. Dirty, dry threads will give false readings. Some mechanics disagree, but I never use gasket sealer on a head gasket. Just my opinion as a Mechanic and Machinist.
