Perhaps a bad diode in the alternator. That was not an unusual problem in the early Delco units with external voltage regulator. One effect of a bad diode was that the charging rate was reduced sharply from the expected rate- also would cause discharge as you describe. There are ways to check the diodes with ohmmeter- my slow typing would never get past the time limits for finishing a post here. Perhaps the free testing at the parts stores would reveal the presence of a bad diode. The diode is not necessarily the only possible cause of the discharge.
