H Distributor Installation

I have a problem. We were working with a '42 H when it quit running. We tracked the problem down to the points - The spring steel that opens and closes the points broke. It appeared to us (having little experience with this particular situation) that we had to remove the distributor housing to replace the points. We made an index mark on the distributor housing and the mounting plate so we can reinstall the housing where it was, and we indexed the way the rotor was pointing, but when we pulled the distributor that index got bumped and moved. We know within about 15 degrees of rotation where it should be, but not exactly. If we turn the engine over so the timing mark on the crankshaft pully is on the timing index pointer, and set the rotor to point at the cap's post for #1 cylinder will we have it right? Any hints will be greatly appreciated.
