The following information may be of interest with reference to Kero Burning M, posted 6/19/02.The H and 4 Series had an option of three compression ratios. Gasoline 5.9, Gasoline/Distillate 4.75, Kerosene 4.5. Scource: IH Blue Ribbon Service Manual. I guess the M and 6 Series would have been similar. Nebraska Test # 327, Sept.5-17,1939, Farmall M, Distillate Fuel, Octane 38. Test# 328,Sept.11-20,1939. Gasoline Fuel, Octane 70. "Nine states in 1949 imposed gasoline taxes that were not exempt or refunded to the farmer when the fuel was used for agricultural uses". Scource: "Tractors and Their Power Units"(1952) Using distillate was more of a matter of farm economics than anything else. On the subject of costs, gasoline is expensive stuff in New Zealand. I have been able to obtain some jet fuel which was contaminated with water and condemned for aircraft use, from a maintenance shop at the local airport. My H which has a low compression head runs well on it with no troubles so far, although it is mostly used in 5th gear on the highway.
