M with PTO problems

My brother has an M that a seal is leaking around his PTO shaft. He also says he can push/pull the pto shaft some. I don't know beans about IH equipment so I need to ask how much is normal play for the shaft and how involved a project is it to fix that seal? What basic steps will this procedure take and about how long? We are trying to decide if it is a pay someone else to do it job or not. Thanks so much for your help.
