After inspecting the steering system, the worm gears and u-joints seem to be in good shape. However, there is play at the top of the front steering shaft (the large horizontal spindle). The nut on top holding the sector gear seems to be tight, so I'm assuming the front spindle needs to be rebuilt. Also, when filled with 80 wt lube, the lube just pours out the bottom of the steering gear housing. What is involved in removing the front spindle, and can it be done in a well equipped home garage? How is the spindle removed, and what might be required in the way of parts for the rebuild?
