The 5/16 fuel lines were used on a lot of vehicles that had carburetors. They used inverted flared steel tubing similar to brake lines. You could use a brake line if you are using inverted flared fittings. If you need to cut a line for size it would need to be double flared and any cutting needs to be done with a tube cutter. The easiest thing to do is to install a flexible neophrene hose and use the push on barbed fittings. The push on fittings come in inverted male flared or the regular female flared for connecting to to a male flared fitting. We used these in at work for years.
