My 300U grinds and wont go into gear if the clutch has been released while running in Neutral. My uncle has a 300 w/ a backhoe and says his does the same thing. He says his goes in easier after it is good and warmed up. I've discovered on mine however, if i idle the tractor all the way down, and push the hydraulic lever all the way forward it will drop right into gear. ( the lever I'm referring to switches hydraulics to run loader when all the way back, 3 point when positioned in the middle, and currently nothing when all the way forward) I dont know if this helps, I am new to owning old tractors, but enjoying every minute.
