The parts info shows a 3/16 thick x 7/8 wooddruff (half moon) key. I'm very surprised your shaft has no slot for it. I wonder if you have just missed it and the slot is full of grease or other crud. The woodruff key slot does not come out to the end of the shaft. These gears are pressed on really tight, but I think you still need the key. You are not the first one I've heard that wanted to add a belt pulley and got caught by not getting the drive gear for it. Always make sure you get the gear with a pulley set up for the C, Super C, Super A, etc. The gears are not all the same, so you need the one that mates to the drive you get.
