Splitting the Mule

I decided to plunge in today and split my Hebard Shop Mule. The guts are basically the same as a Farmall A. The clutch was not slipping, but the gears always clashed and the clutch just did not feel right. When I got the thing, the clutch housing was full of a rats nest, which I had cleaned out as best I could through the hand hole in the bottom. That helped, but still had clashing gears. I had no trouble with the split, and when I got in there, did not find much that looked wrong. It has a ball clutch release bearing rather than the bushing I expected to find. Main thing wrong appears to be gummed up grease in the TO bearing, and the pilot bushing. The pilot bushing was not worn much, but I wonder if it is supposed to fit tight in the end of the crank shaft. The bushing fell out when I took the clutch off after the split. It fits snuggly in the hole in the crank, but is easy to come out. It fits over the drive shaft with very little play. Do I need a new bushing??? I believe the gear clashing was caused by the old hard set up grease and scale on the throw out bearing and on the clutch and shaft splines, keeping the clutch disk from sliding on the shaft and releasing completely. I'm taking the clutch to the shop tomorrow to have it reworked. I plan to put in a new TO bearing and a new pilot bushing just to make sure all will work. The remains of the rats nest were still a mess!!!
