Farmall H high gear out

Our neighbor has an H that won't stay in high gear. It starts to shift into gear but doesn't go in all the way. As you let out on the clutch it pops out. If you try to hold it in by hand the gears grind. All the other gears work. I pulled the shifter and tried to put it in high with a long screwdriver but that didn't work either. Any ideas on what next?
