head problems

i have just rebuilt a 1952 farmall h engine and ran into a problem.there is a copper line that goes from the back of the head to the front of the head. it connects to two fittings. someone told me it is called the oil return tube. does this have to be on the run the engine. i have seen a lot of 4 cyl. engines that don't have this feature and i need to no if it is a important part.also someone has tried to convert this tractor over to a 12 volt system. how do i convert it back to the 6 volt. i have the generator but what else do u need to complete the job. thank you for the help
