I have a IH 444, its a good strong old tractor regardless of the years of abuse from no prevenative maintenance. The problem is it has a marvel schriver carberator on it and in top of the carb has a solenoind screwed into it. I have been told that this is solenoid that tells the electric fuel pump to shut off when the carb bowl is full.
I have sent the carb to the local shop to have it rebuilt and ordered a new solenoid, now for the problem the old solenoid wire was cut off, it only had one wire running from it, I assume to the electric fuel pump. If anyone has any iformation on how to re-wire this crazy thing and how to adjust the shut off solenoid, which appears to have a adjustment screw in the top of it> The information is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

manual shows wires 6 and 7 coming from the fuel shut off solenoid.

wire No.6-- fuel shut off solenoid to resistor light green

wire no.7--- multiple connector "A" to electric fuel pump to fuel shut off solenoid- light green w/ black tracers

Hope this helps. good luck

I Have a 2444/444 IH. The sol;eniod only shuts off the main jet in the carg to prevent diesleing at shutdown.
The fuel pump is independent and if it won't pump you will need to trace the problem down.

On the wiring diagram thing, all I have found it a wiring harness diagram....Not much help at all.

one thing to note the coil is a 6V coil. The resistor for this coil is in the form of resistive wire in the harness.....

I dont know beans about a 444, but Ive NEVER heard or believe theres a system that turns off an electric fuel pump when a carb bowl is full!!!!! !!!!! !!! An electric fuel pump might cycle n shut off upon a certain pressure, but float bowl level I dont think sooooo . I bet the shut off Gerald n Bob M are talking about is whats going on.

I'm not familiar with the 444. But I recently went thru a Marvel carb set up exactly as you describe on a JD 3020.

----

That solenoid closes the main metering jet when the solenoid is denergized (it's spring loaded closed). I presume it's there to shut off the fuel and prevent a hot engine from running on/dieseling at shutdown.

The adjustment screw on the solenoid sets the carb high speed mixture.

The solenoid should be wired to the "I" (or "IGN") terminal on the ignition switch.

----

Incidentally if it was the guy at the carb shop that told you that solenoid controls the fuel pump, I'd be looking for different carb shop(!)

Just when a guy thinks they've "heard it all" a story like this comes along!

What sort of a NUT told you a story like that?

Generally that solenoid shuts off the main jet when ignition is turned off. It keeps the engine from dieseling when its shut down hot by turning off fuel.

So its wire should go to the same circuit as the ignition power and the fuel pump power on the ignition switch.

That is not the case, To the best of my info the solenoid is a fuel shutoff for high vacuum conditions, and would connect to a control system. The fuel pump would run all the time and be self regulating. You need a wiring diagram, I do not have it, but I believe the info you were given would be incorrect. JimN
