I am hoping that someone out there will have some background on Leyland tractors. I have read up on the internet but not found much on resale pricing and values. I have the opportunity to purchase my first tractor and do not have the finances to purchase the John Deere of our dreams. Our friend has offered us the following complete package including: British Leyland Tractor (approx. 15-20 years old as best as we can figure), box scraper, 5' rotary cutter, 9" Continental auger post hole digger, flexible tine harrow and Continental 30 Gal sprayer. He is asking $2,400.00. It seems to be a good deal to us however we have not found many places that have spare parts for this tractor. We would appreciate any input before we make our decision. And no we do not have any information telling us what the model number is on the tractor. It is in good working condition.

Sounds like a fair deal to me! Check the engine for water in the oil, these motors were prone to blowing head gaskets if they were abused and were overheated regularly. They would also crack liners and/or the bottom of the block in the webbing between the bores, esp, between 1&2 and 3&4 cyls. Despite this they were a sound and sturdy tractor. Do not be concerned if the brakes do not seem too special, the are a dry disc type and were never the best. Keep adjusting them and they will come back with use. As you are unsure of which model it is, I am assuming it is a four cyl; however if it turns out to be a six banger grab it quick!, these are now quite rare, even in old Blighty. Good luck

I have a 344 British Leyland ( Nuffield ) Tractor,
a 1970 Model which my father bought new. Here in Ontario you can get parts through Dealers and mechanics who can order from a company called Vapomatic that specialises in British Tractor Parts. Vapomatic does not seem to deal directly with the public. Parts are pricey as these Tractors are now orphans. Sounds like a good deal to me if the Tractor is in good shape.
Hope this helps !

I have used two of these tractors for the last 15 years or so, one is a 272 synchro and the other a 384. Both are around 70 hp, with the 272 being a few years newer(complete with rotary injector pump, and very desireable syncromesh gear box) brakes ned constant attention to keep working at all, and all the linkabes underneath need frequant greasing to avoid seizing up. Good old workhorses all the same, clutches have a short life when used with a loader much. Power steering gets sloppy with time and can make life interesting on the road, especially when those brakes are also neglected! Bottom line is however, fine tractors,no fancy bits to go wrong, will last for years, just keep clean oil & filters to it and remember GREASE everything.

The tranny level dipstick is not on this tractor; instead there is a level plug on the back end-a small brass bolt on the left hand side of the PTO shaft. Just fill with oil until it runs from this plug.Hope this helps
