Winter wheat crop is about gone here in NE Colorado. After looking like one of the best in years this spring it has gotten no rain. Farmers are close to plowing it up. This is summer fallow country where ground is fallowed (kept free of weeds) all last year and then wheat this year. It never had any sub moisture to carry it through. There is little else that will grow here. With no rain they can't even grow cow feed, like sudan/sorgum. So much different than all you guys that have had rain all spring

Well, it could be worse. It could actually be worth something for a change..... oh yeah. That DOES suck.

We can be dry up here in SW Manitoba (in fact we are now) but most of us never think of Colorado as being dry because the only place in Co. most of us have ever been is Denver airport and it's been raining or snowing or at least freezing when we were there. I am about to go look Co. up in an atlas. What is your nearest city/town?

I am talking about Greeley, Sterling area.
I would love to farm next to DIA or south Denver. Seems it rain-showers every afternoon. They still don't have storm drains on the I 25. Get a little farther North and some showers like to run East from Cheyenne. Farther North and it snowes on Allan :-).

I looked it up. If Denver seems like "the promised land" that must be frustrating cause it's not that far away. What stage would that winter wheat be in now? Heading? We often grow decent crops (summerfallow is rare now) with very little moisture here, but I think the main difference is what we call a "hot spell" and what you call a "hot spell". It was long before my time but there was a whole generation of farmers that got their hearts broken around here in the 1930's because it just would not rain. Those of us that are left are mostly descendents of the survivors. I don't have to be frugal and that's because my parents were.

Been there, did that. I was born in 29. grew up in the dust bowl. Original homested. Still have farm there but Uncle S pays better than farming. Rent grass to very good friend.
