Need to tear down old sheds in N. IL--Wood worth anything?

I've got two sheds that need to come down. They're both leaning pretty bad, and the roofs are a mess. This is in Northern Illinois.
They're not too big, each one is maybe 35' x 20', give or take.

Is the wood worth saving? Is it worth anything? Anyone got any good contacts in the N Illinois area I could talk to about what to do with the wood?

Just trying to figure out if i should just burn it all, or if anything is worth saving.

I have a small wood shop and 2 yrs. ago I had a shed given to me for tearing it down. I ended up with enough good lumber to build some nostelgic outside toilets,to use as storage for garden tools, and pool supplies. even had an order for one for inside, it was a 4 and a half footer for the garbage can in the kitchen. I put a shelf in that one for the extra bags, and a hanger for a dust pan. 4 full sized ones and the smaller one made me $800.00. and the scraps kept me warm while I was building them

What the wood may be worth kinda depends on where you are (close to a good sized town or city, or way out in the wayout)...as already mentioned, any OLD wood is valuable, and if any of the siding is weathered to a sheen, woodworkers love it.
(I've been told the OLD wood is much denser and stronger than the same type of "newer" wood, because of all the artificial growing boosters used).
You'll have to check around your local area...
If you decide it's not worth the labor of taking it apart piecemeal to sell or burn, check for any recycling outfits there--here they often dismantle structures, free of charge, to recycle everything.

Seems like to me it would be faster just to set a match to them. If they are leaning, then something is rotten somewhere, and chance are, if rot is in one place, its in another.

The frames seem to be rotten in several places (hence the leaning). The siding has a little bit of rot on the ends, but otherwise looks good.

A match would be easy, but both sheds are near woods and other structures.

If nothing else you could sell the lumber for firewood, at least advertise it as barn lumber. It is going to cost a small fortune to heat your house from now on with Propane being $2/gallon now or higher. Firewood is selling for a premium in some areas. My neighbor sells it and gets $70/face cord.

Barn sididng picture frames are not as popular as they were maybe 15 years ago, but then you get in certain crafty type stores and they have every item under the sun, made out of old siding and even use lots of coragated roofing.

As for walnut, it has gone through phases as to its popularity. I am not sure what walnut timber is selling for now. I just know when I was a kid, my dad always kept walnut lumber on hand. We built calf troughs, gates, little bit of everything out of walnut. It lasts good.
There is a little walk through gate down by the pump house that I am sure is 40+ years old.

Tore down a few old sheds and replaced some old barn siding about 10 years ago. Ran an ad in the paper and sold all of it within a week. Those artsy-craftsy people just eat that stuff up around here.

According to a family legend, a distant relative bought up a bunch of farms in Missouri during the depression- land was so cheap that he supposedly pretty much paid for them by selling the walnut he salvaged out of the houses and barns. Some of the buildings were square-hewn logs, built log-cabin style- so lots of walnut.

I would think the sideing would be worth saving. What type of structures are they? If it has any old beams, especially if they are pinned together with wooden pins, those would be valuable.

I had a local farmer once tell me he was going to burn down an old shed. He said I could have the siding, come to find out it was sided with walnut. That was 30 years ago, and I still have some of it. Made some nice picture frames.

Its amazing what you can do with a planer even if the wood old and weathered. Most old siding on barns are a "true" 1" thick and can be plained down quite a bit to match current wood thickness. You can pick up some nice long wide peices that way.

Couple years ago I helped a friend with his house. We pulled off all the cedar siding and numbered it. With the siding off he rewired the outside walls then filled them with insulation. On a Friday I would come back and help him run the siding though a planer to remove all the old paint then nailed it back up. Day to take it off (one side at a time) he rewired the side for a week and planed it in a day and a day to put it back up. Beat the *&^% out of hand scraping the old paint off. The newly planed siding soaked up the oil base primer and the paint looks great 5 years later.

In the end he only bought a few new peices of cedar siding to replace what we broke pulling it off. It was a whole summer project for him but the final product was well worth the effort.
