I have a 1963 gas IH 706 that is wired positive ground.

What would it take to convert it to negative ground?

My concern is the distributor. Do I need to do something with the distributor if I change the polarity from positive ground to negative ground? The reason I am concered about this is that Pertronix makes a different electronic ingition upgrade for the tractor depending on if it is positive or negative polarity.

It should not take nothing as some ding bat hooked it up wrong . But you did not say gas of diesel . As if it is a diesel then it should have two 6 volt batterys and the battery on the right side of the tractor the ground goes to ground and the pos. cable goes to the ground of the battery on the left side with the pos . cable to the starter. IF a gasser then one 12 volt battery mounted on the right side and here again pos cable to the starter and ground to ground.

It is a gas tractor and has a single 12volt batter.

Based on the limited electrical drawings I have been able to find it came from the factory as a positive ground.

I would assume that if I changed the battery to so that the negative goes to ground, swap the generator leads, and swap the leads on the amp meter that I would be fine.

However I am not sure why their appears to be a difference in the ignition upgrade units between positive and negative grounded 706 tractors.

I have asked PERTRONIX if I could just swap the wires on their electronic ignition modual and their responce is NO. I need a different kit.

Hoss,

Delco Remy DID NOT make those stupid-a$$ed "one-wire" outfits some of you guys are so "hooked" on.

They are AFTERMARKET abominations built in a recycled Delco ase (or a new "knockoff" of the Delco case).

Why not do the job RIGHT, and use a standard "3-wire" Delco???

Third Party Image

They are CHEAPER, BETTER, charge SOONER (lower RPM's), and are less likely to DRAIN the battery during periods of non-use.
