I've been planting corn on my place for many years. This year I'm using RR corn. How does the chemical application work, do I still need to put down pre-emergence or do all the weeds and corn come up then Round up is applied to kill the weeds? This RR corn is new to me.
Thanks

Just use the Roundup for cleanup just before the corn canopies. Put down a preemerge. Roundup prices have quadrupeled this year and the pre is cheaper than two applications of Roundup and will give you residual control and control of Roundup tolerant weeds.

Corn is real sensitive to early weeds & shading.

You can either:

Spray glysophate early, and again later before canopy. 2 aplications.

Or, you can put down a preemerge to keep the early weeds in check, and spray later with glysophate to get all the late weeds.

Depends if you have a lot of acres, lot of rain, timing of getting that first spray on in a timely fashion, and if you use rr soybeans, you don't want to use only glysophate every year or resistance builds up.

Short version....

I personally Sell RR Corn, and have never had any complaints. Its fairly expensive compared to a TMH seed.

Did your Monsanto dealer not explain to you how to use the RR properly? If not let me know and I will send you an information sheet, and if you have other questions let me know

Thanks

Dave from the County.

Vanity fair article on RR crops in reply to joho, 05-07-2008 02:45:33
I know Vanity Fair mag. is not the first thing most of you look for on the mag rack, but there is a big article in there on Monsanto and their Gestopo tactics being used to track down farmers who "brown bag" soybeans.

You'd think that when a man gave his word and signed a contract to not steal he might honor it. But then that's just my opinion.

We have been using a half rate of HarnessXtra and then applying the roundup with a pint of atrazine before the corn is 10 inches tall. If the corn is over 10 inches tall leave out the atrazine.

Remember that roundup has no residual and that is the reason for the other chemicals. Unlike soybeans, corn does not have sufficient canopy to give season long weed control.

Don't use RR corn myself. Those that do generally put down a pre-emergence.

They use the RR for the post application to clean up any late weeds.
