oil coming from air filter after starting

I have a '64 gas MF 35. Today when I started it I heard a burp and then oil started running down the side of the AF cylinder. Does it sound like there is something obstructing the air flow? The tractor has sputtering a lot in the high gears lately and I thought it was the spark plugs.

Any ideas what's going on?

thanks
chuck

Turned out to be a fouled plug.

Hello Chuck Naill.
I would check the oil level. If there is oil coming from any other source, it will be overfilled. That is what I think you have , also if it is a diesel raw fuel will do the same thing, broken or cracked injector tip.Late injection timing will have the same results. Not pump timing but injectors that pump late in the compression cycle, especially on a 2 cycle Detroit Diesel.
Leaking fuel under the valve cover..... ..
fuel lines fittings. Guido.

I agree with the compression test...

Just went thru this with my old M puking oil out the air cleaner and it was starting to miss.

Engine oil was 2 gallons over full due to a leaky hydraulic pump seal.

My MF65 gas sputtered like that for a while (and gave the occasional burp) and I couldn't chase the problem. It was running terribly by the time I pulled the valve cover and adjusted the valve clearance. They were way out of spec. After adjusting, it ran like a top.

Check cylinder compression, It could be a leaky intake valve! Make sure to follow good practice. JimN
