A friend of mine had to get his 1941 JD B running, mag bushing shot ruined case, and cap.--So he had a 4 cyl mag that will not impulse.--WE then took a "ghost fire coil from a motorcycle". seems to run fine on gas,but when you change it over to fuel it shuts off.--We can't decide if the coil don't have enough spark?? [ie] same as mag?? plus not sure what compression should be, to run on fuel. I know this is not the norm, for a restoration project,but he is on a very limited income. Any input will be greatly appreciated. THANKS

I have a 42 B that is set up with the two tanks. I have run it on diesel but it has to be hot , 180 or so , and it runs fine but if you are not working it hard , it wont run very good, just forget about fuel or kerosine and run it on gas. With the price of these fuels it is foolish to spend the extra money, Anyway to address your question , you really need the impullse on the mag. B mags are not that hard to find usually about 100 to 150 dollars in good condition and there probably is a couple on the YT ads right now.

WHAT are you using for a spark advance... you say the mag's impulse does not work. NORMALLY, at cranking speeds, the impulse "catches" and retards the ignition timing to close to TDC. As soon as the engine "catches" and begins to speed up, the impulse "drops out" and the timing advances to 20º to 30º BTDC instantly.

With no functioning impulse in the mag, the spark will NOT advance. If it is set to near TDC for safe starting, you will be WAY short of ignition advance at running speeds.

You say 'fuel'. What fuel are you trying to use? If it is not volatilised the engine will not run.

I don't know For sure. I know he said off road diesel.It does have 2 tanks.You think mabe the smaller one is a reserve?? [FORGIVE ME IF I SOUND STUPID]DON'T SEE INJECTORS EITHER.

ive never heard of a gas tractor successfually running on diesal.I think he should mean kerosine. There are two tanks, small one is for gas, big one is KEORSINE. You start the tractor on gas, run it for a few mins, then switch it to kerosine.

I don't think any gasoline engine tractors ever used a magneto, but rather a coil/distributor arrangement. If the tractor had TWO tanks (a large one for "running" fuel, and a smaller one for "starting" fuel)- -then it was not a GAS engine. The small tank was for gasoline- - -The large tank was for TRACTOR FUEL, lower in octane than gasoline, but considerably higher in octane than either diesel or kerosine.

ALMOST ALL tractors before about 1950, used a magneto,even those with electric start. The small tank was used for gas and starting then switched to large(distillate;kerosene, fuel oil) when engine was HOT(180-190)and had to be kept hot by radiator shutters and/or manifold heat, had to also be shut off by switch back to gas to fill lines and carb or it would never start cold.

Thousands of gas tractors used a mag. And the large tank is for kero or distillate as some call it and the small tank is for gas to start and get the tractor up to temp.

this is the right forum you may want to ask over on the JD forum. the small tank is for gas the big one was for distillate I'm not sure exactly what distillate was but it's long gone diesel fuel will not work. most guys just use gas

dump the diesel , use K1 kerosene like used in lamps or torpedo heaters it will run on K1.The motor has to be at about 160-80 temp to run correct.
