I have been working on my little riding mower over the last few days. Tried 3 mags on it then tried another spark plug and it fired right up. Did some little things like bolt it down to the frame and put a shroud on it, but now i have this problem to work with. It was running and making this horrible grinding noise so i looked undernieth it. This is what im up against right now. That pulley runs to the transmission, and it spins freely down there. The hole in the shaft is threaded, but the threads are missing about 1/8 inch in, then they start. I cant get a bolt in there. I also cant weld. Any ideas?? It has a key to hold it in place but that slips out without a bolt and a washer in there. And the pulley needs to be up that high ( cant be lower) for the belt not to hit anything. Thanks guys

lanse, i gave yer problem a little thought, and think i have an inexpensive and easy way to fix. if you have a tractor supply or farm and fleet near you, measure the crankshaft diameter, prolly 3/4 or 1 inch shaft. pick up a hub for the weld-a sprocket assembly with the inner bore diameter to match your mower shaft. the hub is machined to match the shaft size and has a keyway in it with a set screw. put a longer key in it so the hub can share the key with the upper pulley. tap the hole bigger on the end of the crankshaft, new bolt and good to go!!

Lanse your gonna need a new pulley. That one will never center on the shaft the way it is.

Or take that one to a machine shop to have rebuilt.

But if it is a cast pulley you will need new.

Lookd like to me the shaft is battered up, probably from someone getting in hurry to get something off, and the hole in the pulley is just too big.

Not pictured or mentioned ,You will probably will need a shim bushing, or spacer, length of shaft exposed to keep it up in place .

Lanse, are you talking about the key and the set screw that holds it into place? If so I drilled and tapped the hole to the next biggest size in the past when they are really messed up. Or you can take the pulley off and re-tap the same hole same size, same thread pitch. But make sure the pullies are in-line when reinstalling, Belts flying off at random times makes for a aggravating day. DTURKE

Do you have a tap/die set? You could probably run a tap into that bolt-hole on the pulley and be in business.
