I bought a 400 chevy engine and was wondering what size the heads were. 2.02 or 1.94, it was out of a station wagon or something, nothing high powered probably. And the man also said it had electronic igniton, what year would that possibly be?

Why waste your time on an old set of possibly cracked heavy cast iron heads with restrictive ports and poor combustion chamber engineering? They sell a matched cam, manifold & cylinder head that are designed to work together.

Street Legal & Street High-Performance Heads Edelbrock Performer RPM S/B Chevy

I successfully ran 1.94 350 heads on a small block 400 in a '76 pickup 'way back when.

It would probably work to run double hump 2.02's.

they made 400's from 1970 till 1979.
only year that was different was 1970, it had 4bolt main caps. the arguement still excists today whether they are better or worse then the 2 bolter's. I've heard enuff from multiple engine builders to use only 2 bolt blocks. we install 350 connecting rods when we rebuild them, you have to buy different pistons, to make them an even better motor.

I have not found anything listing 400 heads with 2.02 valves so I cant say they did or did not have them , but it looks like they did not .

Looks like you could get points and hei in "73
Mortec"s
400 block casting codes:
330817.....400...72-80...2 bolt
3951509....400...70-71...4 bolt
3951509....400...74-80...2 bolt
3951509....400...74-80...2 bolt
3951511....400...70-73...2&4 bolt

Nasty Z28"s
400 block casting numbers
400 1970-72 4.126 (2.65" main) 4 bolt 400 1973-80 4.126 (2.65" main) 2 bolt 1973-76 3030817 400 - - 2 car, truck 1973-80 330817 400 150 180 2 car, truck 1970-80 3951509 400 150 265 2/4 car,truck 1970-73 3951511 400 255 265 4 B & G body

I have a 4 bolt 400 under a work bench that I am sure is not a 1970 casting . It was a 71 or 72 cuz I could have sold it for big bucks last summer to a guy wanting a 1970 casting date for his restore project .

Don"t believe everything you see on the internet , I see lots of conflicting info by reputable sites (mortec ,Nasty, others) not that they are trying to be misleading .

If you use heads that weren't originally on a 400, make sure you drill the steam holes in the heads, you can use a 400 head gasket as a template. If you don't have them there's a high likelyhood of overheating and a cracked block.
