I want to add a JD hyd front assist to a late model 4020D ps.. I"d like to find one that is in good mech. shape but maybe the guestion is finding one "compleat" in any kind of shape.
.. are these units mostly a bolt on ?
..dose anyone have a JD manual for one?
.. what could I expect to pay for one?
were the one"s JD made for the 4020 also used on other models as well?
Thanking anyone that can help me with some of these questions... Jim Storms 660 848 2985

I think some of the parts are the same on 6600-7700 combines and others with the mudhog rear axles. I had a 1970 4020 with the HFWA and it was a nice tractor,18.4x38's, powershift, a lot more tractor than the 1968 4020 I had. I think they used the same axle on the 4020, 4320, 4520. Good luck in your search....James

Time it's all said and done you will probably have $7-8000 in the swap. There was a complete front axle on ebay a few months ago, with poor tires and leaky motors it brought over $2000. As was said below, you will need a larger hydraulic pump, another complete wiring harness, switches and relays, all the lines, valves and manifolds. If you are figuring on using it as a work tractor, you will soon find out they are tempermental, prone to leaks, give no assist in reverse and tend to heat up the hydraulic oil. Many of them were removed, standard spindles installed and lines capped off. They improved some on the 30 and 40 series tractors, but are no comparison to MFWD.

One correction. They do work in reverse.

I'm not sure the JD and the Levy are the same. I know that adding one to an existing tractor looks a bit hairy as I believe they had a unique (higher capacity) hydraulic pump along with lots of extra plumbing and electrical switches and gear. It's not like you just swap front axles and hook up a couple of hydraulic hoses. From what I've seen, it would be easier to restore a tractor that already has it installed. But, then again, I'm no expert.

I think the unit you're talking about was built by Levy. Oliver used them quite a lot more than Deere I think. Oliver factory installed them for a while. Also sold them for field instalation. They had their own pump I believe. Can't tell you much more than that about them.
