My son recently acquired a dodge PU. Heres the story. Pulled off freeway. truck started to overheat. turned off.lost fan belt 400,000 on vehicle, mostly interstate mileage. At this time frame what are the pitfalls and things to look for, will appreciate any and all comments please try to not start a WAR. THANX 30 CC

Assuming you have only one belt, make sure idler and alternator and water pump and anything else are free. Otherwise you are right back where you started.

Check the belt tension pulley to see if it has siezed up, I worked in a shop for a few years and we used to see this quite often..tensioner would sieze and burr off the belt 'til it broke..one of many possibilities...

If the fan belt broke,it could have been slipping on the water pump pully....this would cause a over heat problem....i thonk a new belt will fix your problem.....

good luck Don L C ...southwest Ohio

Go to Link and become a member, then post a message in the 'HELP' forum describing the truck's symptoms. Be sure to fill out the truck's specifics in the 'Signature' box so that viewers of your post will know what you've got. FYI the 1995 is known on the website as a '2nd Generation Dodge CTD' (Cummins Turbo Diesel). There's a lot of knowledge on that site and it shouldn't take long for the answers to start coming in. 8)

i guess the first thing is how hot did it really get? warning lights flashed when belt left you, but you gotta find place to pull off,etc etc just loosing belt, coolant system should still be full--if it all boiled out you could have problems regardless of milage.that milage is gitting up there for 5.9, but you may not know whats already been done. some models had head gsk problems, but thats noticable--check everything that belt drives, something maybe locked up.-try it.-

I have300,000 miles on my 95 cummins diesel. It has pulled small loads heavy loads and everything in between as well as a daily driver. It is 2 wheel drive and gets almost 23 miles per gallon. So far the only trouble is a terrible oil leak. Also has trouble getting heat in the winter. I'm sure that other things will go wrong but for now she is great.

I'd put a new fan belt on and drive it. Whats done inside is done. All depends on how hot things got. I'd keep a close eye on the oil and the water, looking for either one in the other.

I just went through this on my truck, kind of. In my case my injectors were fouled out and dribbling fuel rather than spraying. This advanced the engine timing and got the head hot face even though the temp gage never got above normal. In my case the symptom was oil in the water but no water in the oil (pointing to head or head gasket rather than block. My head gasket was ok but it was blowing under the gasket where the head was warped. Cummins reman head and upper gasket set was between 1100 and 1200, 6 new +40 hp injectors another 600.00. The guy who helped me charged me 175.00 to change the heads. All total right at 2000 by the time I flushed the radiator and changed the oil.

If fan belt went bad and came off....it was slipping on the water pump pully for a while....result---not enough coolent to cool engine..... new belt will solve your problem....
