Surfing the net, looking for a reasonablily priced 60-85 hp tractor to feed cattle big round bales. Ran across a site with several Belarus tractors listed. I do not know anyone locally who uses these machines. My question is on their reliability and parts availability once things do break. Any comments would be appreciated.

McCormick Equipment in Portland Mi sold the crap out of those things for a few years. Said when they came back for the 100 hour service everything was loose. After that,I guess everything was OK. Problem is,they quit selling them. Only dealer I know of in Michigan anymore is in Omer, and I don't even know where that is. There are a LOT of them out in service around here, but resale value is about zero. They sold one to the neighbor,85hp,front wheel assist. They had an auction 2 years later, the 2 year old tractor sold for $6000. They didn't have air conditioning. A guy that I was selling calves to at the time bought a new one for $25,000 because it was the cheapest thing he could find. I told him at the time he'd be money ahead to buy a 20 year old Deere or White, but he didn't listen. They still have it,probably because they couldn't give it away. I suppose,if you can get one dirt cheap just for loader work,go ahead and buy it. Run it til it drops.

not gonna say they are the best tractor out there, but we"ve got two of"em and for the price,I still think they are a bargain.. the 4355 is 15 years old,we"ve had to replace a fan belt on it..and a rear tire that we stuck a pecan sprout through..thats it..been under a loader most of that time, feedin round bails and pullin a 15" batwing.. someone mentioned their tires are expensive..LOL..yes they are,all 16.9 x 38 tires are,no matter what color tractor it goes on.. Personally for the money,I think they are hard to beat..

I worked on these tractors for many years. They are built in Minsk in the Republic of Belarus which was formerly part of the U.S.S.R. exepting the smaller air cooled tractors which are Russian, they were exported by Tractorexport in Moscow. The early Minsk built tractors were a copy of the American Farmall tractor and it has been updated, but by western standards they are still very out dated. Apart from oil leaks they were reasonably reliable, but the build quality nose dived around 1993/1994 and they became real pigs. Because of their low technology they are easy to work on, but be prepaired for regular repairs. In England where I worked on them parts were very cheap untill you wanted somthing electrical then they were very expensive. The thing was, a farmer could by a new 70hp 4WD Belarus for the same money as a clapped out 20 year old Ford or M.F. 2WD, after he had it for 5 years it was still worth about 1,000 pounds from a purchase price new of 5,000, which although the % depreciation was high, the actual value lost was less than a new western built tractor lost in it"s first year, so ownership was cheap. It is your money, and you do with it what you wish, but I would not want to own one.

My grandfather's neighbor has one he has had for I am guessing over 20 years. He uses it like a truck in the winter. I do not have any idea how many hours it has on it but it's alot. He said if it burned up he would go get one just like it. They use it as an utility tractor.

There has been a dealer here in western KY for a while that has been good about parts.

Shopper,

I know two guys who have Belarus tractors. One is an older guy who uses it for haying. He thinks it's a good tractor and is very pleased with the price/performance ratio.

The other guy has a smaller one that is a two-cylinder, air-cooled diesel. He seems to have had a fair bit of trouble with it. Among other things, he has a five-foot tiller that he pulls behind it. The tiller really works well because the lowest gear on the Belarus is a creeper gear that allows the tiller to do its thing. I think that maybe his problems are because the tiller is too big for the tractor.

Both of them are able to procure parts locally in Middle Tennessee.

Good luck if you decide to try one.

Have a 562M that I bought new back in 91 and still going. Use mainly to roll hay and feed with. Sure some leaks and not as smooth as some others but for what I paid its ok. Would buy another without a second thought.

I have seen several of these tractors at auctions. Most of them appeared to be almost new / very low hours. Over half the time there was no bid given on the tractor. The other times the bids were very low with the owner or dealer, trying to sale, refusing the bid. I can not recall a single time when the sale took place at the auction. I know two people who have owned these tractors, both were bought new. These people are very maintenance conscious and used these tractors on small farms mowing pastures etc. One of the tractor owners became very upset by having the dealer come out on a regular bases to change filters on the transmission and hyd systems. The tractor was less than one old when it was traded at a large sacrifice in value. The other owner has stated several times he had made a mistake but could not afford to sale the tractor at the price it would bring.

We ran two over the coarse of 17 years. They are fairly reliable and pretty decent on fuel.We had a 520 and an 825,both with 4wd and loaders.Actually, only one loader as we kept the loader from the first one and fitted it on the second.Parts got expensive, tires were really expensive. They were alkward, rough, really poor on user friendliness, and just embarassing to be seen on to say the least. If it is all you are comfortable in spending, yes,it will get the work done, but it will take much of the pleasure out of field work.A field and a Belarus is not unlike a teenage girl getting escorted to her high school prom by an ugly old drunk.

Actually, Belarus tractors are built in Minsk, Republic of Belarus.

We had an old 520A years ago. It was a crude, oil leaking, unreliable, primitive beast. We were glad to see it go. That was working with WWII technology. Now they've moved up a few years. They've probably caught up to the late 70's or so by now. They're cheap to buy and expensive to fix, and they like to be fixed. Electrical systems are next to non existent... so the chain was often the best starter. The 520's only redeeming quality was that it was easy on fuel.... and it could LUG, mainly because nobody cared about it anyway. If it blew up or got stuck in a swamp, it was cheap enough that you just go buy another one! Most of those old things are gone from around here now. They've all been cannabilized to keep the remaining ones going... I wouldn't have another one on the place.

Take the money you would have spent on this thing that Belarus calls a tractor, and go to Las Vegas. The odds there are far far better that you will get something of value for that money. Belarus tractors are make in the country of Belarus, a former soviet republic, not that the people there might not make something of quality. But these tractors aren`t it. I can't imagine that anyone who makes a living farming ever bought one of these things after seeing one. They must have sold them all to people who never had actually seen one in person or to people who only wanted a lawn ornament that make it look like they were farmers. On the outside they look like they were made by a jr high school detention class, and I can`t imagine they are any sort of quality at all under the surface.

It's funny you mention the jr. high detention class.... We used to hear years ago that they actually were assembled by prisoners as forced labor! Not much incentive there to do the job right. I don't know if that's actually true, but that's the story we used to hear.

A well respected local veterinarian went to Russia on a "cultural exchange" trip in the '70's. His most enduring recollection was in a tractor repair shop. Everyone seemed very comfortable with talking to him, through interpreters. They're talking, with great relish, about the political problems in Russia, etc., etc. Someone is operating a forge, with large amounts of cinders and crud coming out of the forge and settling on everything in the shop. Someone else is repairing a tractor engine, and is getting ready to put the head back on it. Cinders are settling all over the place, and the guy working on the tractor doesn't even wipe them off the block and pistons before fitting the head- too involved in his conversation. It's like they're just going through the motions, and don't have any pride or responsibility in what they're doing.

Belarus is NOT a Massey tractor. It is Russian, built in the city of Belarus. People who own them seem to like them. In NY, they are primarily purchased by those who don't want to spend much money on their tractors. I know of some who pull theirs with moderate success.
