is it a small block chevy, like a 350, or does it have odd looking valve covers, straight across the top and then kind of half circles around the spark plugs? with a dual point i'm kinda leaning to a 348/409 motor. the biggie was the 435 hp dual quad 409 from the 1964 era. the old small blocks had a hole about golf ball size next to the distributor for the crankcase vent. the porcupine head, 396/427 came out around 1965/1966. the 409 was a 135 degree v-8 as opposed to the 90 degree in the small and big block motors. they had gobs of torque, but did not like a lot of rpms.

Huh? 135 degree?

The 348 & 409's (W engine) were still 90 degree motors. The only way I can figure any one mistaking it to be anything other than 90 degree is that the cylinder decks were milled off at at an odd angle. The surface of the heads were basically flat and the large open combustion chamber was formed by the wedge left at the top of the cylinder. The bores and crank throws were still 90 degrees apart.

Check out this months Car Craft and theres a big story in there about building a vintage 409 into a 500hp 481 stroker by boring .060 and triming the main journals on a 454 crankshaft to fit in the old the W block. Kind of a waste really, I'm sure they could have bought an equally potent more reliable 502 crate engine for less simoleans.

There are some fellas over at the classic truck board here that can probably help you. I stumbled across GMC's "twin six" V12 and posted there about it. I got inundated with incredible info on it by the fellas. I'd never even heard of one.

Give it a shot, never know. And GM did have dual point distributers in more than one engine, including the "twin six". What a monster, like 712 cubes and 2 small two barrels. Potential!!!

Mark, the 702 did have two sets of points in the same housing,so dual points would be correct :)

The dual points were in the commom box that mounted the twin 6 cyl distributor heads, no points/condenser in the distributor heads, just the rotor and cap for a high voltage rotary switch. I believe each point/condenser set in the common housing switched a seperate coil for each distributor head.
I dont know that any of the stock Chevy V8 truck or industrial stuff used dual points. The only one I remember was the iron case corvette unit with mechanical tacometer drive.

You know? You may have a point there. There were dual points in vettes, and plenty of after market dual point distributers that made it into chevys before electronic ignition came to be. Mallory was one such dual point distributer manufacturer, but don't remember about Accell. Never know. Back then, manufacturers did have some odd balls that I for one would scoff at, and then along comes a huge V12 and I'm standing there scratching my head saying, "Man, that thing most definately is one huge V12".

Now's the time really need one of those old reliable counter top AC or Delco shop manuals...before everything went to CD or mainframe computer. They had eveything in them including cross referencing. Should never throw old manuals out, but I'm guilty of...
