I have a looong driveway, all gravel. Right now about 1/2" thick of ice all the way down. I would like to have a salt spreader (tow behind an ATV or tractor) I have never seen one in a store or catalog other then the kind that mount on the back of a pickup.

I made a spreader from an old rear end from a car. Turn the rear up so the yoke points up. Made a spinner to bolt to the yoke. Made a hopper from some scrap steel and made some brackets.welded a hitch to the rear end. made asliding chute on the bottom of the hopper. as you pull the unit the wheels make the yoke spin and you open the chute and the sand or salt falls on the spinner. The faster you go the wider the path of material. I sand the private road that I plow it is 1 mile long put some sand on the back of plow truck and when the hopper is empty just fill it up again. Its buried in the back right now but it needs to come out soon for all the snow we are getting here in in eastern Ontario.I will post some pictures when it comes out.It was cheeaqp to build doesn't look like mich but it sure beats spreading by hand.

Yes we did, before we bought our snow-exs we had a steel bin with a little spreader powered by a window motor that was controlled of the trailer plug. lol Good luck

You may want to use sand instead of salt on a gravel drive. Maybe for one time use on a drive salt might not have any adverse effect but, I know our township doesn't put any salt on the dirt roads in the township as they claim it will make a very nasty mess by keeping the ground underneath soft and muddy. Personally, I do not know either way.

You always move farther south giggle.

No I like the idea of the seed spreader or maybe a drill to spread it.

If you have young kids or grandkids I bet they would love to spread it an learn how their Grandparants did it in the old days by hand broadcasting. Think about how much fun they would have slipping and sliding as they spread the salt.

I currently use my ATV and put 2 bags of salt on the back and then use a shovel to throw it, not a real efficient use of the salt which is $6.50/80 lbs.

Here is a cheap idea use a hand spreader while sitting on the tail gate of the pickup. then you can kinda control the rate of salt you need.

Most any yard and garden sead or fertilizer spreader will work. I use a walk behind broadcast spreader. Works well unless its so slick the wheels cant turn or I can't stand up!Then a few hand fulls of salt from the hopper go a long way. I pull behind is a great idea.Hmmm...

I have an old oat wagon with a seeder on the back that runs from a chain around a big gear on the left rear rim. If the tires weren't completely shot I'd be putting salt through it.

Check Nothern Hydraulics catalog I think there are several models that would fit on an ATV, and price not too bad.Good luck,
Paul

At work we use a 3point seeder on the back of a Kubota, works good. Jim
