I worked on a 54 Bel-Air vaccume wipers and there wasn't any power much and had lots of vaccume.I took the vaccume operated motor apart and cleaned it and relubed it but still no luck.Is there a place to buy rebuilt units or a rebuild kit for this thing?I looked under Amsoil/Trico with little info to help. The motor is Trico brand.I did notice a torn gasket,a swelled up rubber diaphram looking device that was not sealing on the flapper that wipes back and forth also.Any help would be appreciated.

While it sounds as if your vacuum source is adequate, that car probably has, or had, a dual-diaphragm fuel pump. The extra diaphragm pumped vacuum to keep the wipers going when engine vacuum is low. If that diaphragm ruptures, the intake manifold will draw oil from the crankcase, the car will smoke worse than a mosquito fogger and consume a quart of oil about every 30 miles. Replacing the fuel pump is the cure.

We worked on the vacuum wiper motor in my Dad's 55 T'bird a long time. We had it working pretty good until we installed it. It still did nt have the power to move the wipers. Ended up going electric. From what I understand, there is one guy still rebuilding these, and he has a long line. Cannot seem to remember his name. Hope you get yours working. If not fear not the electric.

When you get your new vacuum motor and want it to work going up a long hill? Get you one of the quart grapefruit cans off a 70's Ford car or truck and add it to your wiper system, they have a built in check valve for holding enough vacuum to get you to the top. But hook it up wrong and you're no better off that what you have now.

I had a 56 Chev in my young years with vaccum wipers. Had my share of problems. I finally converted it to electric. Sounds like the vaccum motor is the problem if you have good vaccum. Is this vaccum good at the engine or at the hose before connecting to the wiper motor ? I assume you have checked out the hose for cracks, etc.
