Hello all, I will be looking into a 92 k1500 4.3 that seems to have lost it's 4wd after an engine swap. Long story short, no option of taking the truck back to the mechanic that did the swap cause knots would get swapped, I would go to jail, and so on. Sometimes the only person you can trust is yourself.

A quick survey shows all connections are good at the front axle and transfer case. I have yet to get under there with a meter. I was hoping someone would have a schematic to show what to look for prior to getting dirt in my eyes. It looks like a simple system.

Thanks in Advance,

Aaron

Now keep in mind that I have a manual transmission. I use the Hy-Tran in the manual transmission and the transfer case. I don't know about how Hy-Tran would work in an automatic transmission.....

I would have to look in the book when i get home to see what is "recomended". But I've used Hy-Tran in mine for the past 100,000 miles after rebuilding the tranny. I've 235,000 on it now.

No Joke, heck, got that stuff running out my ears.... I need 8 gallons per application, they only sell 5 gallon buckets, so that leaves 2 gallons of the golden stuff. So right now I have 4 gallons just laying about. ATF going for 3 dollars a quart, you might have an idea there....

Thanks,
Aaron

I have a '91 with the 4.3 and a manual 5 speed. Had a situation this past summer when it would not lock-in. My problem was fixed after I check the fluid level in the tranny case, and filled it back up. Now I don't know how that could relate to anything, but it has been locking in ever since...
I have a HAYNES repair manual for it if you need me to look something else up.

Never thought of that. The truck came back from the mechanic with 10 quarts of oil and 4 quarts of antifreeze. The top was left loose on the tranny so we have no idea how much they put in there just that it was empty when we got it. Never thought to check the x-fer case. What oil goes in there? Gear oil or ATF? Thanks Aaron

Thanks guys, I will certainly look into the harness behind the intake manifold first. If that is indeed connected, then I will do a thorough analysis using Bob's info. I think the axle harness has two wires. There is some sort of adapter harness mounted on the front axle. At least now I have information to get started with. Regards, Aaron

Behind the engine, near rear of intake manifold,,there's an approx 4 or 5 pin connector that probably didn't get hooked up.Gray connector if I remember.Ask me how I know....

There's switch high up on the driver's side of the xfer case that's fed "ignition on" power through the 4X4 fuse.

When you shift the xfer case into 4X4, this switch feeds power to the thermal actuator in the front axle, which then heats up internally, and pushes the axle disconnect togeter.

The little switch next to the actuator turns on at that time, and lights the 4X4 lamp in the cab.

If the actuator has been changed to the newer-style "motor type", there's a little added harness that goes between the original connector and the newer motor, with a wire leadinf back to the power side of the switch on the transfer case.

It's easy to tell which actuator you have... original-style has only one wire going into the actuator. Newer style has a multiple-pinned plug.
