Tomorrow at 7:15 I go in. Right now I'm drinking the gatorade with miralax in it. What do I have to look foreward too?

Make sure that you're not connected to a tv monitor in the lobby during the test!

I had mine last year, the cleansing is the worst.
I saw a show on the Health channel about a man who was bleeding from the rectum and had stomach pains and his doctor said it was hemorroids and when he changed doctors they did the colonosopy on him and found a big tumor that was cancerous.

Gatoraide? You're wasting your time. The dye stains, and you're likely to be sent home to flush yourself out again. Use water.

I stayed awake. Interesting experience feeling that things shoving around under your ribcage and such. Really interesting to watch the movie and see how they shove your gut around by hand to clear the way and keep on traveling.

Keep a sense of humor and the whole thing becomes downright entertaining.

The off-gassing afterwards was the worse part. They inflate you so they can see. The probe has an air supply, and they keep adding air as they travel. So you end up well puffed up by the time they are done, and to say it's uncomfortable is an understatement. You're vented to off-gas, but in my case, I didn't. So the drive home wasn't fun.

Eating afterwards restarted the stunned and stalled digestive system. Twas a noisy night as I finally started off-gassing, to my comfort. And in a few hours, I was fine.

The best part of having stayed awake for the colonoscopy and watching it is knowing what was there and how it did *NOT* match the report the doctor gave.

The gatoraid I drank was the clear stuff. Any of the red or dark colours would mess up the visibility. I do agree on how paperwork and reality often differ. I had considered watching my 2nd scope to repair the problems from the 1st scoping. However I just didn't have the "guts" to do it.

I've got a while to go yet before I need a camera up my tailpipe to inspect the valve train....

My dad has gone through it though a couple times- A bit testy after the 1st time but he learned to laugh with us instead of getting mad at a few wise cracks.

I had a colonscopy abut 8 yrs ago. I went to the can 23 times the night before. I learned why babies cry so much when they have diaper rash! The peace of mind was worth it, though. My dad's life was saved by his colonoscopy!! He had syptoms and they found a golf ball sized tumor, took out 1 foot of colon and nodes with no chemo! That was 7-8 yrs ago. Neighbor on the other hand put it off, was dead in two yrs.

I've had 2 so far. Have to get on every three years. My father and several uncles died from it so I know the importance of having one. The worst part is the prep the day before although the second one I did was better because I just had to take a bunch of pill instead of drinking that gallon of awful stuff.

Just had a lower scope on Oct 17th, another lower scope Oct 22nd for a patch job.And an upper scope on Oct 25th. I spent six days in close proximity with a couple of dozen patients & family getting familiar to their new colostomy bags. >Link

>Link The crying, sobbing wailing and looks of embarrassed anguish from patients & family was horrid. I would rate getting scoped every six months in front of my Mother-in-law and the Reverend better than getting cancer and having to get a colostomy bag. Even though I was one of the rare ones with complications from the scoping. I'm still going back for another scoping someday just to ensure not ever having to wear a colostomy bag. b.t.w. I just read my report today and it was likely scar tissue from an appendectomy the physician thought was a polyp. Test results were o non malignant. There was even a colour photo of the questionable secum area in my file. The 1st scoping is the worst, afterwards you have no dignity or pride left too loose. Don't be worried about the staff. They have seen 100's of both fat and skinny *sses. It depends on the medical facility & the physician. Some are human and some are not. The humane ones knock you out. 24 hrs before the purge only eat or drink chicken soup, broth and gatoraid. The go-lighty, peglyte etc is a mix of every kind of non toxic and semi toxic salts that will mix with water. It's more palatable if chilled very cold. There was some tractor antifreeze mixed with it to sweeten it up some, propylene glycol on the container's label. I'll never look at a jug of anti freeze the same way again. You need to "run 100% clear" several times or there is no use getting scoped. You can't drink too much water either late afternoon and into the evening. You will be hooked to an IV line and a saline solution drip. You will be wheeled into the OR and if you don't need glasses to see. There will be a large color monitor or two. A metal cabinet with a glass jar catch can and some joy sticks similar to a backhoe. They will plug about 6-8ft of turbine engine or pipe inspection scope tooling into the cabinet for power and control. The scope is about 1cm in diameter with a video camera on the end, a sampling grab tool, a cauterizing wire and even the ability to insert a hyperdermic needle to inject medication where they see fit. It's the same tool used for both bottom up and top down. I assume the tool is well washed off between uses. You will be given stage 1 sedative to make you less apprehensive and asked to roll onto your port side. This is the definition of "being left with your *ss hanging out". About now you will get stage 2 sedative and after "feeling dumb as a box of rocks" for 5 seconds,it's lights out. What seems like 5 seconds later you are waking up in the recovery room and pharting like thunder. And the staff are cheering you on to make more noise. I was on the computer in the hospital library 1hr after waking from my upper scope.

My experience has been the same as many others. Drinking that stuff then spending the evening before in "the office" is the worst part. The procedure itself is no big deal - the first meal afterward is awesome!

----

An elderly (age 90) neighbor had one recently - my wife accompanied her to/from the clinic. As the woman was being prepped for the procedure the nurse asked if she was wearing false teeth.

With a perfect deadpan the woman smiled and politely asked "and exactly how far UP are you people planning to go?"

I had both a colonoscopy and an endoscopy at the same time in July, endo is where they go down the throat to look at the small intestines. They put me to sleep and woke up not knowing anything had happened, though the meds they put me to sleep with always knock me for a loop.

I had one about 10 years ago, I told the doc that I did not want to be put to sleep, he said ok, I watched the whole procedure on the video. It was very interesting. I remember the various portions closing as the probe was pulled out. Some where in the precedure, I told the Doc (if you are looking for tonsils, I had them out when I was 10 years old) He found very little humor in my attempt to be funny. Lot's O Luck.

I've had several, both awake and asleep. Once you get done drinking that crap, you have the worst behind you. When you take the test and are awake, you feel a little bit of pressure right at the end of the test. When they put you to sleep, you wake up and don't really know anything happened. Good luck with the test and the results.

I had one and it was no problem. I was out and they took out two pollops. Go for it.

Along the same line....my dear Grandpa was a bit constipated. He had tried several laxatives both over the counter and homemade "suggestions" from neighbors. Nothing worked. He was getting a bit testy. I finally took him some supositories that were guarenteed to work ovenight. I convinced my grandpa to try this one last fix. I checked on him the next day. He was still a bit testy. I asked him if the supositories worked. He said, I tried two of them dang things and for all the good they did I might as well stuck them up my rear end!"

Good luck

I agree with everyone else and that fleet is worse than caster oil EEEWWWH!!! If I were to complain about anything two things I reccommend if they want to know if you would allow a student nurse do your IV believe me no matter how good she looks don't do it believe me if that girl didn't look like a super model I would have knocked her halfway across the room and believe me I have a high tolerence for pain finally had the veteran nurse do it and not so much as a sting. The other was when they found a polyp they burnt it off and that was the only pain I felt somewhere in LALA land. Hey, look at it this way chances are you'll be around to see your grandkids growup and I've lost alot of friends and relatives to colon cancer so what's the tradeoff? I'm due next year not a problem. It also has to do with your HMO as to what type procedure you have.

You are, like many said, going through the worst of it right now. The only other discomfort is feeling so bloated when you come to. Don't worry, it will pass just as any other gas. Seriously, good luck, hope you have no problems. I have had polyps removed twice, and have to go in again in two years. Let us know how easy it went.

Have had about 4 or 5 of them. You are experiencing the worst part now. You won't feel or know a thing. All of a sudden the lights go out and you don't even know when. Will seem like a few seconds and you will wake up in recovery. They will probably off you a soft drink or fruit juice. After a consultation with the doc who will encourage you to take Metamucil or some other fiber. Then you will be free to go to a nice restaurant and RE LOAD ! My favorite cafeteria is only a block or two away.lol, bob
