Big news artical about tractors, automobiles and even firearms as investments. Years ago this was discoraged by brokers. Whats your take guys? Personally I have never lost much on any of the above, if bought correctly. but never tried to figure a % of return etc. My worst worry would be fads /trends and the market etc.

My understanding is that collectables tend to keep up with inflation. Some things will be hot and gain value, others will stay put or loose value. As a catagory it's a wash. As a general rule, anything sold as a collectable will not keep up with inflation.

If almost nobody kept it, it may become valuable. That is why toy collectors want original boxes.

But unless you can predict what will be desired by collectors in 10, 20, or 30 years any collectable is a crap shoot.

Let's see now, the price I paid for it, to get it back in the family (my grandfather bought it new) plus what I've put into it so far (I'm not done yet). I'd say I've spent about twice what I could get out of it. That is, if I ever sold it. Good Investment - NOT. Sentimental value - Priceless.

Most firearms have been excellent investments.I have a Model 300 H&K I bought new for $300 in the early 1980's took it in to a sporting goods place to get a scope line sighted and the guy offered me $900.Tractors can be good if the tractor is bought at the right price and is a rarer model. Some of the more common models have really gone down in price at sales the last couple years the Cub Farmall and N Model Fords have really gone down.

Well, I have several hundred more dollars in my tractor than it is worth and it ain"t even done yet. I am pretty sure it was a poor investment, but it has kept me busy for the last 22 months.

"Big news artical about tractors, automobiles and even firearms as investments."

Well, I'd say get a old car & drive it! It will never lose value, as long as u maintain it & don't wreck it/trash it! Old vehicles are really cheaper to drive if one considers the TOTAL COSTS of driving a vehicle. (This assumes normal driving, not the persons who must commute a hundred miles or more!) They are easier to work on, cheaper to insure, less TAXES to worry about, and most of all THEY ARE FUN TO DRIVE!! I have a 1967 Pontiac GP rag-top & everywhere I drive it, I hafta add ten minits to the trip due to folks coming up and talking about the car!! Talk about a chick magnet..nuff sed!! Tractors again are useful things because we (most of us) have actual things we can do with them. CC

I feel that collecting isn’t a very good investment, just to be investing your money. In order for a new car to ever be worth anything to a collector, you must store it for at least 30yrs, never drive it and hope nothing ever happens to it. Think about what could happen to your investment, it could be stolen, the garage it is in could burn down or some kind of a natural disaster could strike such as a flood, a hurricane or a tornado, if there is any trees around, one could fall down and crush it in the garage, etc…. No way would that be fun. Collectors only want pristine stuff, if it has any flaws, it could be the difference between something that is worth a lot, and something that is just pretty much junk. Most old toys really aren’t worth anything unless they were never played with and still have the original boxes. What fun is it to just store stuff and never do anything with it?. To me, a better investment is stocks, or perhaps bonds and bank cds if you don’t want to take the risk of stocks, however, the stock market really isn’t any riskier and problably has an ever higher return on your money than storing that old car or whatever for years and years hoping that the value goes up. The best thing about owning stocks is you don’t have to worry about the stuff you do if you have something physically to protect.

Havvey,
Anything that can wear out is a very risky investment. A car might be pretty valuable in 50 years, but you will have to keep it clean and dry for that long in order to find out. Even then it's a gamble (consider the Edsel). A good tractor will pay for itself over time, but when it comes to collectibles, the market is pretty fickle. Some folks make a lot of money, but most folks lose in that gamble.
I agree with Dave. Good quality firearms will hold their value, but many won't gain much. Real estate is the most secure for long-term investment, but even that can slump from time to time. There is only one 100% sure investment I know of. I do as Jesus said and "lay up treasure in heaven." The payback is out of this world!
Good Luck and God Bless, Tommy

Any quality gun is a good investment if you ask me. I would say the new "classic muscle cars" being sold in limited #'s by the big 3(Challenger, camero, mustang)High performance versions based of the classics may be worth a bit some day, Look at the current selling prices of late 60's and early 70's chargers, challengers, and sush, then hope a hit movie uses a car you have!! But I still beleive the best investment is land, any land, and agriculture. God is not making any more, it demand is increasing, and land plus agriculture is the ONLY thing on this planet EVERYONE will always need, and the demand will eventually exceed the supply. My opinion, buy a larger farm, manage it smart, and your windfall will come, be it selling the land or feeding the world.
