How can I get more brake pedal out of a car with four wheel disc brakes? The pedal is right on the floor and it stops good but being right on the floor I don"t care for it. I have never messed with four wheel disc and I am clueless on how to raise the pedal height. The back has new rotors and pads less than one year ago. The front has turned rotors and used? pads just over two years ago. (didn"t do it myself so not sure what was done). I know how to get a better pedal feel out of a rear drum car/truck, just don"t know what I am doing now. Any help is appreciated. Thank You
Brad

Most rear disc calipers need to be adjusted after pad replacement and turning of rotors. After you have retracted the pistons all the way by turning and pushing them in,(special tools make it easy) replace your pads. Then put everything back together and actuate and release the parking brake several times (about 20 times). This ratchets the piston out and raises your brake pedal. If this procedure doesn"t work, calipers probably need replaced. G.M. calipers are famous for sticking and causing trouble in the rear. I would advise replacing them when rear brakes are replaced.(70,000 to 80,000mi.)

I had an 03 Impala and I had trouble with brakes-mostly steering wheel wobble during braking. New front pads and rotors will help. Also you need to bleed them good. I always bleed a full large bottle of NAPA brake fluid thru the system. I bleed each wheel until I get new looking fluid coming out. Brake fluid is real bad about absorbing moisture and moisture(water) does not activate calipers as good as brake fluid thus you have a "spongy pedal". The moisture will also rust the brake lines and calipers. Also be sure to free up the slide mechanism's. If only the inboard pad is contacting the rotor due to a frozen caliper you will have low pedal. Also be sure to use the proper brake lube and put lube on the backs of the pads where they contaact the rotor also as this will eliminate brake squeel. Good luck. PS: E-mail me if you have more questions.

I would guess that it's time to put new rotors and pads on again, I have an 03 Impala and have replaced them twice already, I would buy new rotors instead of having them turned, new ones aren't that expensive, they're really easy to work on, just need a set of metric tools.

When I changed the rear rotors it raised the pedal a little bit. Her uncle did the front and had them turned and she said the pedal never moved or maybe got a little worse. That is what I was thinkin of trying first before getting really crazy on changing all kinds of other parts.

I would guess that the master cylinder is all worn out and should be replaced.

Try bleeding the system first and if that doesn't fix it replace the master cylinder.

The more I think about it it could be the anti-lock brake EBCM that is causing the problem. Is it throwing any DTC's

Not sure what the EBCM or DTC's are but no codes and everything works fine it is just the fact that the pedal is pretty much near the floor. The car has about 90,000 miles on it. I would think that the master cylinder would not be wore out but who knows. My wife to be drives this car alot more than I and she does not notice it as much as I do.

EBCM: Electronic Brake Control Module associated with the anti-lock brakes

DTC's: Digital Trouble Codes which could indicate EBCM problems
