You have an object for sale (tractor implement etc). Person calls, comes over looks at it (you pretty much see they are tire kickers non-buyers). Then they want to stand around and talk for hours about the price of tea in China, Your family history etc. You are already 2 hours behind today and won't get done till about 10pm??

I can't even get tire kickers to stop by anymore. It's really tough to sell stuff right now.

I tend not to try and put anything for sale during my busy times of year . I agree with others below, you can meet alot of nice people if you spend a few extra minutes now and then . If someone is here and I am working in the shop they can talk while i keep busy. If its time for field work I just say "I've got to get going and bale some hay"(or whatever the work is) and tell them stop back when I'm not so busy.

Hang a sign on the tractor that says ''NO TIRE KICKERS''.

That sign won't deter all that many tire kickers. I know it won't dter me, it'd probably actually make me wanna waste more of a guys time by askin all sorts of questions.

I'll admit, I look at lots of stuff and kick tires myself, even when I'm not in the market. Ya never know when you may find the one thing you really want, even if you can't afford it...

Having been on both sides of the equation many times I've got to agree with the others. If your the one doing the work and don't have time to talk politely tell the person that you are working and have to go. Just remember that a few minutes, hours, etc spent talking can gain you alot in the future.

If you just say: "I am going to ask you to leave" or "I am going to throw you out" they may leave. If they do not then be direct. If none of this works, my email is open and we can explore this dilemma further.

I have met some really good folks that came to buy something or went to their place to buy something.Sometimes we made a deal sometimes not but an hour or so of conservation can lead to some pretty interesting things and meet some very interesting people.Taking a few minutes to enjoy life is time well spent. Also have ran across countless 'finds' for my antique machinery collector from such conservations.

Well, if you're selling something, your signing-up for at least a little bit of wasted time. There's no way around that--there's just to many tire-kickers and "professional shoppers" out there.

But, if you've shown someone the tractor/implement/whatever, answered all their questions, and they still want to hang around and chat, just tell them you're busy, you gotta go, and call if they have any more questions.

Seems pretty simple.

One more thing to my reply to Davpal , Don't assume for a minute that I can't work along side any local farmer or that I'm a city dude that is wet behind the ears . As for the time is money angle , how do you have the time to hang out on the forum if there's no time to get the important work done outside ? A few minutes being polite is going to set you back till 10 pm ? I don't get it . It's real easy to get someone to leave without being impolite - Just tell them you're busy . Nobody has to lie about it and most everybody including me will understand . Just say simply - I enjoy talking but I've got things I have to get done before whenever time . Even if it is a lie it 's polite and understandable . Since I've been in heavy construction half my life I have given a lot of tips on how to get things done safely and quicker so don't once again assume you can't learn something from a non-farmer . ...Randy

You sound like a German they never have time to talk "Time is money don't waste it"
Hey stop an chat awhile you just might learn something.

The other day I was doing a brush hogging job for a neighbor while chatting about all kinds of off topic stuff he told me about another neighbor who is quitting his haying operation and wants someone to take it over. Now that should pay off big time for a few minutes of Chatting.

Speaking as a person of mostly German heritage I agree with you to an extent. When there is work at hand I tend to be all busines. However most Germans like to visit as much as the next guy , just not in the middle of doing something . As my grandfather (who came here from Germany in 1927) used to say, "when its time to work, its time to work!!

So what makes you think ya aint got time to talk be nice and they just mite tell someone else about your place. If ya got something to sell ya sure should have time to talk about it. Seems like everyone thinks they are in such a hurry to go time to slow down and smell the roses. I sure dont run anyone away from here as they will tell others about what you have cant beat word of mouth.

I dont advertise things for sale and have the same type thing happen here. Not that I want every one to leave without gabbing some but some just dont know when to leave. I have twenty or so tractors in the side yard and people seem to think I have a used tractor parts lot or that I would know where to find what they are looking for. The winter is bad when I come to the door in my bibs and tee shirt without shoes on. Never seen them before and they get long winded. Then they want to tell me all about themselves and what they have and would like to have. If they stay around to long, winter or summer, I usually say (man I gotta pee) (Sorry!) then go in the house. They seem to head for there vehicle kinda quick. At 69 with a enlarged prostate, most of the time I aint fibbing.

Time is money. After I show something, and I do take my time showing them, 15-30 minutes. If I think they are serious and wanting to chat I might spend an extra 15 to 30 mins. I start by asking

1. Anything else you would like to know about ...

2. I appreciate your interest, I've got a meeting/appointment/etc at .... or I have to go to the bank/feed mill/ welding shop.... or I have to get there before they close.

then tell them would you like to make a deposit to hold... or call back if you decide to take it. Im sorry but I cant hold without a deposit

I shake their hand, try to be overly polite, always hand them a business care.

If you suspect a tire kicker, call one of your friends and have him call you in an hour. An hour goes by and your phone starts ringing, hit ignore and then talk into it (What? Really? How? Seriously?) and then tell the guy your pigs and you got to go and give him some cukecumbers or eggs or something and tell him to call you later, and run for your truck and gun it Then drive around the country block and by the time you get back he will be gone.

Or-

If the phone rings well you and he are talking about the equiptment and he is serious about it, just ignore the call.

Our local fuel delivery guy admitted he did something simliar when he delivered fuel to my uncle, who really liked to talk (still does). He had the office call him on the radio after xx minutes, that he had to get to so-and-so's place.

I would be inclined to agree with you except I represent that type of person . I DON'T know the true value of some things as I'm just getting into this which I'm sure also irritates you that someone in there 50's would think to start farming this late in life . I like to talk to those that will talk to me about equipment and techniques and equipment values and alternative ways of doing something . That's the way I've learned to do what I know how to do now . I don't have a problem pitching in and giving a helping hand while I'm talking , as a matter of fact I'm the one that usually offers to help first because I know you guys are busy . If my help is declined , their loss , I'm still gonna talk . I'm not rude to people , that's not the way I was raised . Seems to me if a person WANTS to sell something they need to make the time to make the sale even if that means being friendly for a half hour . I will buy quicker from someone that's friendly than some gruff a$$ that only wants my money . Just my two cents ...Randy

Don't always assume that your "help" is always appreciated by everybody either. Haven't you ever seen those signs that say, (labor $20 per hour, $40 per hour if you help). That is because it usually takes twice as long on a lot of things to have somebody helping you. People trying to get something done don't always want to have somebody jumping in the middle of what they are doing unless they are also well trained at what you are doing. If you want to learn something go to college or trade school. If you want to buy something pay for it and load it up.

Yup You be the type that wouldn't get my money because you are better than me . So much smarter . If you came around here while I was working at my place I've got the time to talk . And it's not that I have the time to talk it's that people are important . Work will be there when you get to it . That's never ending . If you are so pressed for time hire some help . If you are to poor to do that then the work you are doing that's taking so much of your time isn't gaining you anything . If you just lust for more money I pity you . ...Randy

I put them to work! 2 things usually happen, they leave or I get help! "Yackers" usually don't stop by here anymore if I am working, but they do if I am on a break or in the evening and that is ok with me.

I heard a niece of mine make a comment one time about her inclination to talk and talk and talk and, well, you get it.

"I can't quit talking 'cause they won't quit listening".

Cut 'em off. Let them know you're busy and don't have time to hang out and be best buds. You don't have to be rude. But just tell them. If that kills the sale, so be it. Some people just don't have a lot to do. They have time on their hands. It isn't your duty to stand there and entertain them.

I gotta go, I'm busy, talk to you later.

I've gotten pretty good at the "buying/selling poker game". You can pretty much tell when you are getting your time wasted. Most of the tire kickers are not buyers unless of course your willing to give it away. The true buyers don't tend to haggle much, they know the value of time and the value of the piece.

You chat awhile till your certain he aint buyin, and then you apologize - cuz you have way too much work to do and you tell him to call if he has any questions or some such thing.

I agree, Tell him/her that, because this is a working farm/ranch, the manure spreader drag chain has got to be repaired this morning and help would be accepted if they would be so inclined to get into a bit of adventure. Those that stay are often actually helpful, those that leave are less than wannabes. JimN
