What is your favorite brand of oil and why. If you have evidence of why it is better, share that too.

Well here is what I use. I have a small dairy farm, plus do custom baling and harvesting using 30 plus year old tractors that I put several hundred hours a year on. I use a local brand called Emblem. Made by West Penn oil Co. right here local in Warren PA. I had good results with their products and I can sleep good at night knowing I helped a local guy make his house payment, and the crude came right up out of the ground in Western PA or SW NY. Which every body knows that the finest lubricants are made with oil out of the ground in this area.

I'm with Luke on this one. We buy oil in bulk from the dealer so we don't have 500 5 gallon pails laying around. No idea who refines it, but it's whatever Massey puts a label on. Actually I think the dealer switched oil suppliers since we got our last drum so it may be different now.

For my truck and car, I run Federated's 10w-30. Never had any problems. with it, and it's just what I get while gettign the filter from Automotive supply. I've also run Citgo, valvoline, quaker state, castrol, or whatever else may have been on sale at the time.

Brand doesn't bother me, I just try to keep it changed.

Haven't been running it long enough to say it is my favorite but Amsoil seems to be some great stuff. At a recommended 35k/17.5k standard/severe usage oil change AND a half mile to the gallon increase I should see some savings even though the oil is salty This is in a 2000 Denali with 135k on the clock. Have 7k on this first oil change so far and the oil is still clean. Wonderful filters they have! My 1996 Chevy Diesel has 175k with 4k on the oil and it picked up a full 1mpg empty and a solid 2mpg loaded. Runs smoother too. Recommended oil change is 25k/12.5k for standard/severe usage. Check out the site and say what you want but in about 8 months when I fianlly change the oil after 1 full year or the milage limits I will post back and let you know if I have lost an engine or not! I use it and am still skpetical but it sure is makin me beleive. Oh, and I used to use Valvoline. One more thing, if you don't use the Amsoil Mobil 1 full synthetic is the second best oil out there for the money.

I use Mystic(made by Citgo)in tractors, Citgo in my car and truck. I have one tractor that I use drain oil in, and some 90wt if I have some laying around. She uses a "little bit" of oil, but still keeps running. Just add a gallon every few hours and I"m fine

I ran Castrol GTX in my old Ford Ranger and then the little Ford Escort that I had, always seemed to work good for me. Once I ran out, and Mobil was on sale, so I used that instead. I was a quart low 2000 miles after the change. I went back to the Castrol for the next change, and the oil level stayed at the top of the stick.

Not real evidence, but it was enough for me. I recently just switched over to Penzoil Platinum for my car because I was able to get a good deal on it, Ill probably run that with a 5000 mile change interval (which is what is listed for my car on dino juice anyway)

In my Farmall M Im running Rotella 10w-30, but I would probably also use Wolf's Head or Kendall, just out of habit.

I"ll probably get slammed for "selling oil" again, but you asked so here it is. The best oils and greases I know of come from Lubrication Engineers. Dad and I run their engine and transmission oil in both our service trucks, and it"s made a world of difference. The transmissions (an Allison MD3060 and an AT545) run cooler and have smoother shifts and the engines, at least my Detroit, start alot easier in cold weather. You asked for evidence as to why it"s better. Well, when you can open up a 3306 CAT engine (electrolosis ate a liner) that"s been run hard, everyday, in an excavator, for 12 years and it"s clean as a pin inside, there"s no ridge in the liner, and the rods and mains all check standard, it doesn"t get much better than that.Another example. After replacing the turbos on two of another customers machines every 9 months to a year due to the machine shutting down at 1200-1300 RPM (designed that way)and leaving the turbo spinning with no oil pressure I finally convinced him to change to LE. I did this regularly for nearly 6 years on both machines. After switching to LE I remember changine one turbo in 3 years. When a third customer has tried every grease imaginable over the course of 6 years and is still getting excessive wear on the bearings in their dragline we finally convinced them to give LE a try. Last we talked to them they had already been able to cut the greasing interval in half because the grease was actually staying in the bearings and guys from other plants were asking for the info on the grease so they could get it for their machines. Basically, with LE, you pay a little more but you get a better additive package in the oil, therefore a longer oil life. If you pay twice the price for the oil and are able to get 4 times the life you"ve alrady saved money... Thing is try to get most people to understand that when their conditioned to believe that you"ve got to change the oil at so many miles or hours, even though the oil may still be good. In the end your not doing your equipment any favors and it"s costing you more than it should. On that note for any that want to read about good lubrication practices and get the real scoop on oil try going to http://noria.com/ But I"m just a mechanic, not an oil salesman and that"s all just my .02 based on a lifetime of field experience..... .

If you need a rep from L.E. to answer your questions and give you prices or Technical Data Bulletins and info about oil analysis and lube handling equipment and best practices to give you greater machine reliability with lower costs to use just call 800-537-7683, ask for a sales secretary and tell where you live.

When you open the web site look in the upper right hand corner and click on the word CONTACT under the LE logo. That will open a page where you can email them with your info or get their number. Either way contact the corprate office and they should be able to give you the contact info for the salesman in your area. Some of the reps have fairly large areas but if there's one close to you get the him to come by and at least let you see some of their products and give you a tube or so of grease for a sample. Like I said, they've got good stuff, I think you'll be impressed if you give them a shot.

I"m using Exxon 15w40 now. For years I used Quaker State HDX 30 in all my diesels. Only switched when I got a diesel pickup and it called for the multi viscosity. When I had the valve covers off for a 4000 hour valve adjustment on the HDX engines they were always clean, even up to the 3rd valve adjustment (12,000 hrs). When I first went to 15w40 I used Rotella, went with the advertising. I was in a couple of different engines at less than 500 hours after a rebuild and they were already getting junk in them on the Rotella. Switched to Delo 400 since thats what my distributor was a dealer for at the time. His comment was Rotella spent all their money on advertising and not on oil additives. I liked the Delo but when he switched to Exxon as his house brand I went with price. Its $100 a barrel cheaper than the next lowest priced brand he carries ($315 for a 55 gallon drum, last week, delivered), Delo, Rotella, and the others are all running right at $450 a barrel.

So I like to think I am supporting him. Any one cognizant of the WOO knows of whom I am referenceing. My Shop is Quaker State totally.

Mobil 1 Synthetic in my vehicles, change it every 7500 miles or one year, whichever comes first.

Mobil Delvac 1 in my tractor, change it once a year (about 50 hours)... would run it 150 hours before changing if it came to that.

i think alot of pros and cons about this or that brand depends on the user. how one takes care of their vehicle / equipment driving habits, how often your machine is serviced ect. my dad used quaker state for years with good results nearly everybody badmouthes that brand i used it also for several years with good service i have a bro-in-law who never buys the same thing twice he gets what is cheapest. he does match up those little letters in the circle on the label. must work for him, drives a 87 g m c truck with way over200,000

Not saying that oil is oil, but isn't it true that motorcraft is the only oil that is bid on and the only thing truly motorcraft about it is the sticker on the outside. in other words it comes from the same refiniery as the other oils, it is just the low bid with a colored additive. Also you people that have had sludge in your engine did you change ALL your filters or did you just dump your oil and call it good. I have had my share of vehicles and used my share of branded oils and the only ones i have trouble with are the ones i mistreated and thats both expensive and not so expensive oil.

I have heard it is made by Phillips 66, which is pretty good as well. At any rate it is pennys more than what I am running now, and I can get it at the same time I get filters as I run the Motorcraft filters you can also get at Wal-Mart.

I have run Valvoline (with Napa stickers on it) for the 7 years I have been driving, I haven't had a problem with it. I took my last car up to 170k (turbocharged 4 cylinder) and it ran great when I sold it. I am debating switching to Motorcraft since my local wally world started stocking it as opposed to going to the dealer. After all it is what my truck was made to run with and is a synthetic blend.

I have used Castrol in one shape or form as long as I can remember(Back in the 40's and 50's.) I used Shell in my airplanes because thats what was sold at the airport where I kept my planes. I used castrol in outboards(2cycle), inboards (Mercruisers) motorcycles, and trucks and cars. Some of these vehicles went over 150000 miles back then, never had an engine problem on the inside. I switched to Syntec when it came out and use it in everything yet today. I dont know any other reason to use it other than I had been trouble free for over 60 years..Syntec I change only at 8-10 thousand intervals.

I had just about as soon to have tranny fluid as Valvoline. I always ran Valvoline 30 years ago. I tore the engine down in my old truck that had never used anything else and it was a mess. About 2 months later dad tore his down and the same thing. Him or me either have never used it since and haven't had any gummed up engines since. I either use Kendall,Rotella or delo in everything now.
