Welp, finished wheat harvest about 1:30 Sunday morning (good news), made 22.9b/a average (bad news-at least I got to cut some good news), sold it at 5.44/bu. this morning before the market opened (good news since market is down 20 cents right now). Now get ready to plant in September for same ole song and dance next year.

Wow that isnt very much. Last night a freind said their highest yield this year was 70 bushel and we are in a drought. Is that 23 bushel normal in wyoming? does anybody milk cows in wyoming? (just cureios).

What's an average?(:-)Seriously tho, the county average is 30b/a, 4 years ago cut some 42, next year the big white sky combine got it, year after was 15, last year was 26. What with being a dryland operation and the drought its a real crapshoot, like my wife says don't quit your day job. In all truth considering the year it wasn't all that bad, will pay off some bills and cover the farming costs.
There are a few dairys in the state, mostly over on the western side near Utah. There is a grade b operation near me, I think they milk 2700 head with a carosel setup-use a bunch of South Americans and Mexicans for milking hands. I guess its quite a setup, need to get over there some day and tour it.

Another guy and I had a discussion about whether western dairys fed alfalfa hay or some kind of silage. Corn grown here for silage, one dairyman's corn I have been watching is down to maybe 2/3 of a crop due to dry weather. Just curious as to what the dairys do out there.

I would imagine that they do both.
We were looking at buying a farm in the dakotas
and some fed just dry alfalfa and others fed corn silage and hay. They really are not that much different than us in the type of feed they use. it just takes alot more acres.
