I have a heavy log chain that went thru a hot fire. Is there any way to temper it again? or is ruined for good? Thanks for any comments.

I have seen this before. It's Ok until chain snaps under tension and comes back at you, tractor or someone else. Can do a lot of damage is a real short time. I have only used grade 70 or specifically hardened log chains designed for log skidders. Those last one must be super-hardened if cost is any indicator.

Steel is $200 bucks a ton. Might buy you 1/6 of a new chain.

It's not even safe for dragging rocks around the farm. Either sell it for scrap steel. Or use it to lock down the BBQ from theft or to hold cattle gates closed.

Depending on what kind of chain it was, it may not have been hardened or tempered in the first place. If it was mine I would only use it for pulling rocks or stumps, etc. You don"t want to get caught on the highway using anything but factory chain to hold anything down. Even if you are not at fault for an "incident" some lawyer will make life tough for you. Stick to the D.O.T. rules and avoid a lot of trouble. Sad but true, just my opinion,
Paul

Personaly I wouldn't do it and then trust it for any heavy lifting or pulling. and if it is for comercial use and someone gets hurt, your screwed. But if one wanted to "retemper"-"reharden" something one would do a search on this site using those titles.
