I don't know what year and trans you have. My 94 F250 diesel had a similar problem with the E40D auto-overdrive trans - and it ended up being the electric switch sticking. I had a time lag whenver I shifted, especially when cold. Seems there is no mechancial connection with the shifter to the trans - at least with my 94. An electric switch by the steering column sends a signal to the trans. In most other cases I would of suspected cold oil, half-plugged intake screen, etc. as others have already mentioned.

Did they flush the system when they changed the fluid or did they just drop the pan? I've heard several very experienced transmission guy's say that it's very common for a transmission that's had the system flushed to have problems 8,000-10,000 miles later because the flushing process loosens up crud in the lines and transmission that eventually end up in the filter.

I did the work myself. When I rebuilt the motor I removed the torque convertor to drain it, and replace the seal. I removet the pan and a new filter was installed. I will never have my transmission flushed. Stan

In a colder climate than yours, I had similar symptoms, at start up on a Ford 302 w/auto. Shop told me the problem was a hardened lip seal in the valve body. The Ford automatic will warm up fastest (I think) when it is in reverse. Fluid is under more pressure.

Stan,

Tomorrow morning, start the truck, let it idle for 10 or 15 seconds in park/neutral, then drop it in gear and see if it immediately goes into gear.

Normally, your symptom is a plugged filter, but if you've just had it serviced, I really doubt if that is the problem.

Sounds more like the converter/pump bushings are a bit loose and the converter is draining down overnight.

When my car started doing that it was only about 5000 more km and the tranny said that was enough. But have u checked the fluid level? maybe once it warms up and expands a bit theres enough to get u going. just a thought.
