Own 2005 with 6.0 diesel. 12000 miles. Only thing so far was crippled in traffic in limp in mode which allows you to drive about 5 mph max. Had to drive for 3 hours. Couldn't make hill. Police gave me 20 min to move or be towed. I said I would not let them tow a brand new truck, had 5000 miles. Got son to tow with car over hill and drove another hour to dealer. They fixed it free in about 3 days, but wouldn't tell me the problem or the nature. Heard about several of these phenomenon. Everything else is OK. 13 mpg with 2500 lb. camper. 18 empty.

I have a 2003 F250 FX4 with the 6.0L diesel and about 95,000 miles. I had trouble with the air conditioner, have replaced the fuel pump, and some other little things that seemed to happen all at once; and really almost turned me against the superduty series. But I haven't had any troubles since. The 6.0 is a strong and efficient engine. The last time I checked highway fuel economy was at 19 miles per gallon running 75mph. I think I average 15-16mpg though because I'm too into fast takeoffs. Your son should consider the loads he is going to pull. Maintenance costs are alot higher for a 3/4 or 1 ton diesel truck, but if you pull heavy loads alot of miles, then they are the way to go. I only pull two horses occasionally, but bought the truck thinking it would last me forever, and planning to expand the herd and get a 4-horse gooseneck. Honestly, if the truck is not going to be used for constant heavy work, I'd consider the Toyota Tundra. The last time I checked, they had the best reliability ratings. That might get me blacklisted on this website, but it is a fact. Check with Consumer Reports.

I have a 2003 F-250 with the 6.0 diesel,4X4 with the six speed manual. It was built in late april 2003, I have had only ONE issue with it. A simple reflash of the computer and it has been trouble free ever since. 120,000 miles on it to date. ZERO issues. The ones to look out for are the ones built before January 2003.

Let me help you narrow your search. What you want is a 2002 or 2003 with the 7.3L Powerstroke for the most reliable service. The early 6.0L (AKA six point oh-no) did have some significant issues. Supposedly they were resolved in the 2005-2006 model years. I never bought into the 6.0L and personally feel that Ford/International really hurt the F Series line with the issues.

I personally own a 1997 F250HD with 240,000+ miles and wouldn"t trade it for the world (except for possibly a 2002 dually...).

I can second what you say about the 2003 6.0L. I owned one for 20,000mi. before I got rid of it. The dealer had it more than I did. I loved the truck but that Navistar motor was absolute JUNK!
