How long can you store diesel fuel before it starts to deteriorate? Gas supposedly begins to go bad in about 60 days but I've never seen a number for diesel.

Thanks

I've heard that diesel is good for about 2 years. Dave

This question keeps coming up. My farm tank has a filter right between the tank valve and the hose to clean the fuel just as it goes into the hose. I have used fuel that is 10 years old with no problem. Tank is elevated in full Sun. I think the filter is the key to success.

'Bout a hundred years or so.

I bought a combine two years ago that had been in storage since forever. Ran like a top thru harvest last year and will use it again in wheat this year starting with the same fuel.

Our Farm fuel last all year without any additives or other problems. Most fuels now are pretty good at lasting a lot longer than they did a few years back. I wouldn't think nothing about using year old diesel in any of my tractors.

I know one thing - it depends on how good the diesel is to start with!!

Dad recently got a semi-tanker load of diesel contaminated from the supplier with algae. It started growing in almost everything we had put it in.

Supposedly, it has to have water to survive. Not sure if no water in the fuel means the algae would die.

It looks like moss growing in water...

thats why they make anti-algae products to put in diesel fuel tanks so it will last much longer. You're talking a year or more with the additive.
