How much horsepower do I need to operate a baler with a thrower?

The ground is pretty flat.

Thanks for the help.

Here is a picture of the land. I have a Allis WD45, and a John Deere A. The A is an all fuel aprox 29 hp, and the Allis might be a bit lighter but has the hand clutch and 43 hp.

Do I have enough tractor, or should I tell the wife, you all said I needed another?

We regularly operate a Hayliner 268 - without thrower with a John Deere B, pulling haywagon behind. Only get in trouble a few times on steep hills. Have used the same rig behind a Farmall 200, but it is a bit light for that service. Engine will pull it OK, but you will run out of traction. Would like a bigger tractor, but you "run what you brung." Live pto is nice, but you can do it without, if you"re careful.

Baled many of bale with a 269 New holland with a kicker behind a Farmall 450 diesel. and never ran out of pony power at times though a full wagon and the hills around here would make for some seirous pucker factor. when the load would start shoven ya .

just want to emphasize what others have said. In order to maintain control on a slope, weight is much more important than power.

A lot depends on what baler you want to use. I pulled a JD-14T with thrower behind my Oliver 77 which is 38HP and it played with it. Plus I have a very heavy wagon behind the baler with 2 or 3 kids on the wagon stacking it as the bales flew back to them. That was on rolling land not big hills but not small either.

I'M glad you said it was flat, because if it WEREN'T, you would be in the market of a 55 or 70 horsepower tractor with big weights on the rear tires.

I would recommend a tractor about 45 or so horsepower but would have a relatively ballasted tire/weight combo. Any year tractor should work, but live PTO and HYD. is a MUST!

hope i can help.

You can operate that with a 40hp tractor. Add a wagon loaded with hay and you can find yourself wishing for a bigger tractor unless it is nice and flat, especially going down hill.
