My son made it to the driveway Thursday and the clutch wouldn't disengauge. So we pulled it with the 4 wheeler to get it out of the highway.

Found the slave cylinder with a slight leak so I bought one and it's on the truck now. Before removing the old slave cylinder the clutch pedal would go all the way down and come back on it's own. With the new slave cylinder the pedal will go down but will only come back half way. I can put my shoe under the pedal and bring it to the top.

We have bled the system and there's no air at the bleed screw on the slave cylinder now. Just brake fluid.

Hope someone can point me in the right direction . Is the master cylinder bad now? What else should I be looking for?

Not sure on an 87, but on my '92 and '94 F-250s, I've had several slave cylinders fail.

The mechanic that has always replaced them said you have to pump them until your leg falls off to get it bled all the way...

Thanks for all the replies. I'll get busy and try some or all of your suggestions. I'll post back on what fixes the problem. Thanks again to everyone.

If the slave cylinder had only a SLIGHT leak, and the system still had fluid in it, the SLAVE cylinder was NOT your problem.

Could be a mechanical problem between the brake pedal and the master cylinder, a bad master cylinder, or even a failed T.O. bearing, or lined plate or pressure plate.

Does this truck have the clutch and brake master cylinders reversed from the location of the pedals. If so, check that the brake pedal shaft is NOT slipping in the lever that actuates the master cylinder. If this is happening you will never get the full stroke of the cylinder and the clutch will not release. Ford's cure for the problem is a new lever, but a little weld will do the job, just make sure the lever is in the right place before you stick it. I had the service bulletin somewhere but I think it got tossed out, I will check tomorrow.

If yours is like the ford rangers, you need to unbolt the master cyl from the firewall and tilt the front end upwards, not straight up, just enough for the air to go to the end, then while holding it in that position bleed the slave cyl.

Those things can be a pain in the a$$ to bleed.
Did you let the master go dry when you changed the slave. And if so did you bleed the master again.
Usually I'll let it set overnight and let the air bubbles and foam rise up to the master rather than try to force air downward. give the clutch pedal a few pumps once in a while. You should see the pressure plate seperate from the disk at least a 1/6" when pushing the clutch pedal down if all the air is out of the system.

Try power-bleeding, BACKWARDS.

Connect the source of brake fluid to the bleed screw on the SLAVE cylinder, and force the air up and out of the master cylinder.
