I have a 80 ford F 350 I haul my tractor and mower on. The truck was running real crapy. It is due for a smog check in a few months, so I decided I will take the carb to a carb shop for a good overhaul. I wanted it right. I get the carb home mount it, and the fuel will not fill the float chamber. Motor will run with gas is dumped in the top. Gas is at the fuel inlet. This tells me the float is stuck closed. With fuel line disconnected at carb put finger over hose outlet gas squirts good. Shoulden't the slightest amount of pressure open the float valve. Not too happy after spending 250.00 on a carb overhaul. I thought about a little air pressure to open the float valve, but if it opens will it stick closed agin, when I'm on the road. I know the guy will say buing it back in. There goes another 1/2 of my day.Stan

Stan, on that carb, you can pull that stud that holds the air cleaner on, take those cap screws out and take the top off.

You can even start it up and watch the carb action.

Very, very simple carburetor. He charged you $250 to overhaul that thing? He made a profit of about $235 on ya. :>(

That's kinda what I was thinking ? That has got to be one of the best to work on. Now if he had one of those BIG Holley truck carbs. with 4 barrels and governors and all kinda junk hanging on it then I'd say he got a good deal.

If the float valve was not installed correctly,(easy to do) then you could tap an bang an pump air all ya want to. She still won't pass gas till it's fixed. If ya JUST got 'er built an she don't work right let the feller get it straight so ya don't be a tapping on it at the side of the road after midnight.

Just my $.02

I would recommend that you gently tap the float chamber, close to the gas entry connection, about five to ten times. If the float is stuck, the vibration will sometimes free it up. This is all you can do other then remove and check.

If you want it right, you'll need to do it yourself....
