I installed my ignitor 1 kit on my 460. I am not getting any spark at all. I tested my coil and all my wires and connections. They are good. I think the ignitor module may be bad, how do you test it? I had to shave the bottom of my rotor button down for the cap to seat right. Is this typical or is something out of shape?

Re-check you connections and polarity. 99.9% of time the electronics are fine. What and where did you connect to?

"99.9% of time the electronics are fine."

Buick;

That statement makes me think you haven't been around these units very much!

When's the last time you had that kind of problem with the standard points system? The percieved gains from electronics aren't worth the headaches and money. It made it all these years with points ignition , now you convert it and look what happens , before you even try it out.

I see at least 5 or 6 posts about faulty electronic ignitions on tractors for every 1 about points type. We are not " Luddites"! We are just smart enough to know that everything has a practicle application and some that are not. Antique tractors are NOT a practicle application for electronic ignition. Believe me , they didn't come out with EI on every day driven cars to save the public the hassels of changing and setting points or to give us more horsepower or any other such nonsense that they now advertise to sell these things. The whole electronic ignition system came about so they could get the lean mixtures mandated by ever stiffer emission standards of the Uncle Sam , to fire. Notice I said "system". There is a complete system on our cars of today , from HEI caps,wires,rotors,coils etc that gives the gains we see. The aftermarket units , like Pertronics , are nothing more than the triggering unit to the coil. On an antique tractor with no other upgrades , it won't do any better job than a set of properly set points and is a waste of money. If that makes me a Luddite then so be it. Technology has it's place , and I applaud where it has taken us , but this is just not one of them. My '66 GTO has the latest "hi-tech finish system on it and I still run points in the dist. instead of EI. The paint is worth it and will prove it through the years. The EI is not and has already proved it on this car. Luddite? Hi-tech is great but these people have been fed a bill of goods about the gains they will get from just a triggering unit and it is B_S. Just my opinion , we all have one.

buick;

Have you ever installed a special-order Pertronix unit (oddball application) on a farmer/customer's grain truck (carefully and properly installed with the correct new coil and new wires) only to have it inexplicably fail the first or second day of harvest AND having to tell him the truck would be down for 2 weeks or more while a replacement could be ordered in?

Well; I did just that last fall; and there were words used other than "Luddite".

(The truck was a Ford 7000 with factory EI. A cab fire had destroyed the wiring for the original EI and the special-order Pertronix unit was chosen to simply replace the messed up OEM system with a system needing just a power wire to the coil. Therefore going back to the original system or to points were not readily feasible options when the Pertronix unit failed.)

I am not saying that the units are BAD; no matter what the product there's always a bad one now and then.

What SUCKS is getting a replacement quickly for the less-common units SHOULD there be an "issue".

If the unit is not a common one you are SCREWED until a replacement unit finds it's way through "channels". The company apparently doesn't believe in having "spares" for some of it's less common systems at locations around the country and you WAIT for the part from the factory.

Needless to say the truck has been running well ever since with an ALTERNATIVE EI system.

(We have installed LOTS of Pertronix units over the years with only a couple of failures; but that one sure "left a bad taste in my mouth"!)

My 600 tractor has been running for 16 years on the same set of points.If my points fail completly today I have a spare set ready to go.The failed electronic ignition will have cost the owner 200.00 and the tractor isnt running.I have had an electronic ignition fail in my truck in the driveway.I just happened to have a spare distributor under the bench.Took the module out and got the truck running at zero cost.A friend had one fail on the road and paid 300.00 for the tow, new module and labor.I cant take this kind of risk when getting the hay in .By the time you have bought fuel and twine theres no cash left for 100.00 ignition modules.Haying equipment always breaks down when you have hay down no matter that you have kept it in good repair.A 100.00 not piddled away on something you dont need could be better spent to register the boat and trailer and put some gas in the truck to take in some fishing on a quiet pond.You dont have to spend 20 grand on a boat.My boat and trailer cost 400.00 powered by oars and an electric motor.

My tractor is a 12v negative ground. The positive wire from the switch is going to the positive part of the coil. The red wire from the ignitor is going to the positive part of the coil. The black wire from the ignitor is going to the negative side of the coil. That wire is the only wire I have on the negative part of the coil. What is wrong with this set up? I am following the pertronix diagram and I have tested all wires and they are all of the correct polarity. My father was working with it the other day and he said he hooked something up wrong and the ignitor module was smoking. I'm pretty sure it is burnt up. How do you test the ignition module?

If you let the smoke out of the module you will need a new one.

Greg is correct. Time for a new Pertronix unit and to take away the tools from your Father. Electricity is actually looks and smells alot like compressed smoke which is injected into electrical and electronic devices at the factory.If you let the smoke out they don't work anymore.
