Standard or stub guards on a NH 479?

Bought a NH 479 haybine from an elderly couple I know yesterday. They bought it new in May of 76'. Kept it in the shed every night of its life and hasn't been used in over ten years. It's in real good shape and shows very little wear. Problem is it has standard guards. I personally have never used anything with standard guards, only stub guards. Everybody tells me standard guards are worth a darn, gots to have stub guards! The old fella that owned said he always got along just fine. Now, being I am pretty jewish when it comes to the checkbook, I get to thinking, maybe I should just put new knives on it and try it with the old guards? Or will I cuss it every step of the way? Maybe I should just break down and get all new guards and hold downs and everything, just costs so dang much.

Advice???

Thanks for al the replies. The standard guards that are on it are in very good shape, not hardly any wear. I ordered a new sickle and a new sickle drive belt for it and that is where I am gonna start. I think it'll suit me well. Again, thanks.

Regular guards should work fine if the guards and the sections are sharp. Also they protect your sections better in rough or rocky fields. We never run stub guards here because of the rocks.

The 479 is a fine machine. Check to see if the guards are worn out (rounded off where the knife passes over it making the cut). If they are in good shape, run them. If a bunch of them are worn out, decide which to replace them with. If I ever had to give up my disc mower/conditioner, I would use a sickle machine with standard guards.

We have a 474 (I think) that we have had for years. We cut about 30 acres a year with it since the 80's. It has standard guards on it and we have not had any problems with it.

I bought a 479 haybine last summer that had been shedded for at least that long. I sprayed the cutter bar down with lube, and have cut about 7 acres. Mine had the long stub guards, maybe the short guards are better in your area. I have no complaints with the long, but I am also cutting grasses only. Try them, and see before you change them. Maybe you can get by with the thing as it is.

Around here, the long ones are what we call standard. The shorter are the "stub guards". I too am only cutting grass hay. As cheap as I am I am very tempted to try it, but I don't want to spend my hay cutting time out there un-clogging the cutterbar.

The only time I have to unplug the cutter bars is when I hit a patch of hay left from previous cuts that wither were missed by the baler, or were broke open bales. Now what I do is run a fel, and pick up the lost bales. I'm getting better at windrowing, so I can keep the baler pickup in line with the windrow. But, like I said, the only plugging came from running into old cut materials left behind from previous cuttings.
